| Carsick Baby... Okay, so I'm a fairly new Yorkie mom, and everything is new territory for me. My poor boy gets the WORST carsickness. I'm talking he may be in the car for 5 minutes before he starts throwing up. On our last trip to the vet, my vet recommended that I buy liquid Dramamine. I was so excited for this solution. Tonight, I went to buy some, and it is nowhere to be found. I've looked everywhere, but all I can find is pill form. I found a chewable Dramamine tablet made for children. Would this be safe for my sweet boy? |

| Hello!! without knowing more info..... I never heard of using the dramamine for yorkies (you may be able to Ill let the more experienced in this area handle that) but how does your baby ride in the car? I have heard that if you use one of those snug car seats for pups that it makes them feel secure and I use a thundershirt on Charlie when he rides in the car. it helps allot. Charlie is 6 and he is just now starting to enjoy riding in the car. you will get allot of help with this from YT. Good luck

| Huey had terrible car sickness issues until I got him a car seat where he can see out of the window. Like that, he was pretty much cured. (He did ride in a crate on the passenger seat & couldn't see anything) There is only one trip that we take that he still gets sick, and that is miles and miles of twisty, turny, mountain roads and he gets sick at exactly the same spot every time. His favorite seat was a basket-type by Outward hound that I bought on line. We have destroyed that one after years of use and have gone to a snoozer-type seat, but he doesn't seem to feel as secure in that one as he did tucked down in the basket. As long as he can see out of the window, though, all is good. We have never used any medication nor have we had to try the thundershirt, but I would certainly try the thundershirt and a car seat before meds.

| Thank you both for your help! He typically rides to the vet in his crate in my car because he gets so sick. I'll have to try getting a car seat for him. I'm not entirely thrilled with the idea of using meds on Smokey because he's so young and pretty small. I'd love to find a solution because we'd love to be able to take Smokey on car rides with us more often. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | First, WELCOME!!! I'd talk to your vet about Dramamine and get the dose. They may have other suggestions too. Sometimes, Benadryl works for car sickness, as does ginger. My Dad's dog has a prescription med, but I can't recall the name right now.

| My Abby (2yo) got so sick(over and over) she could never go anywhere in a car. Now I can take her on short trips if I have someone to hold her. The snoozer carseat is not the answer for her. I hope she continues to grow out of it but it is hard to get her used to it when she has such a bad reaction.. |

| How long have you had him? He might just need to get used to you, your car, and realize that you're not getting rid of him. Lola threw up 3 times in 3 hours on the way home when I got her and a few days later she threw up twice during a 5 minute car ride. I didn't take her out again until she needed to go to the vet a week after getting her, she shook but didn't throw up. It took a few more rides to get her comfortable, but now she does great. I try to take her out at least once a week to keep her used to the car. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Liquid Dramamine should be available by prescription, if that's the route you go. If your vet doesn't carry it, ask about people pharmacies. Target will fill scripts from vets. I would be leery about the tablets because they are 50mg tabs and from what I can find, the recommended dose for dogs is 1-2 mg per pound. Cerenia is another prescription med for motion sickness in dogs. If you think it's anxiety rather than true motion sickness, I definitely would try a Thunder Shirt.

| Thank you all for the suggestions! He's still fairly new to our family. We got him in June, and he's become super attached, so anxiety might be the case. The funny thing about it is the fact that when I bought him, we drove a little over an hour to get him. On that long drive home--he laid on my lap the whole way--he never even acted sick at all. Now, we can't even put him in the car without him getting sick. I've never had a dog before in my life, so all my worries are amplified with Smokey. He's my only baby, and I want to make sure I do everything right. |

| Huey is a very nervous passenger. I think he would be happier if he were driving Every turn, speed change, stop, etc. he has to look out the window and assess the situation. The being able to see out of the window has really helped, but I still think he would prefer to drive...

| Jack got car sick the first few times we took him out to Montauk (3 hr ride) and he whined a lot in the car. Still does sometimes. So I made it a point to not feed him before we go in the car or just give him a little, if anything. I also got these all natural ginger treats at our Cherrybrook store and wa-la! He hasn't gotten sick at all. He still whines for about 5 minutes but once he settles in, he's a happy puppy. Dynamo Dog and Wellness both make ginger treats. Jack likes all of them lol

| Hi! Welcome to YT, I'm pretty new too, it sounds like we got our babies about the same time. My "baby" Lily is 2 years old. She also suffers from car sickness On the ride home from adopting her, she vomited 3 times in the car and that was without having breakfast! Just bile. Prior to her adoption, she had been in the car less than 5 or 6 times and each time she either went to the vet or the groomer - both not fun destinations. I work with animals all the time as a trainer and caregiver and being able to bring Lily with me is a big deal to me so I can tell you that I've done days of research on this topic and I'm glad to tell you that things have gotten MUCH better. First, for long trips and special occasions, please know that Cerenia is a miracle drug. It was specially designed for dogs and can be prescribed by your vet. We live in Los Angeles and just spent a weekend in San Diego and Lily made it 200+ miles (round trip) without any discomfort! It almost brought tears to my eyes, I'm not kidding you. I wrote the company a testimonial letter and sent my vet a thank you card. Hahaha! Traveling with her is a big deal to me. Secondly, for short trips around town, I can't express to you enough how powerful easing your pup into the car gradually will help. Lily shook the first time she got in my car - full on trembling fear. DH and I spent about a week just bringing her to the car, hopping in and getting her to feel comfortable. Even just sitting in the back seat without the engine on and rubbing her belly until she was wagging her tail! Next we did the same thing with the engine on and really focused on our own energy to make sure we were calm and shared that calm, happy feeling with her. Over the next few days we took her down the block, a mile or two and now we've worked up to short drives to the park or to see friends - happy destinations! (Luckily I can walk her to the vet!) Now, I will tell you that on the short trips we've had about an 80% success rate. There were times she would salivate heavily and times that she did vomit. The times she vomited on the short trips were the first few that I was so happy I just said GOOD GIRL we MADE IT! And then she barfed. Haha! Again, it was my energy helping her to feel calm. Since then when we arrive, I stay calm and use a soothing voice with her to help her out of the car and take it very slow. Lastly (sorry this is so long but I can so appreciate your pain here!) Something that really helped is having her sit in a car seat. I read that sometimes pups get carsick when they simply cannot see out the window (think about seasickness, the thing that helps is staying on deck and viewing the horizon.) and also the fresh air helps, making sure that all windows of the car are down at approximately the same level because this stabilizes the air pressure inside the vehicle. I purchased the Kurgo Skybox about $60 at PetCo but I've found varying prices online. Best $60 I've spent on her, giving her that stable footing and security of being able to sit/lay down/stand up to look out the window has helped tremendously. I hope my long novella of a post can help you in some way! Good luck and keep us posted on your progress with your baby!!

| Thank all of you for your input! I'm sorry we're all in the same boat, but I'm thankful for your experiences so that I have something to learn from. We'd love if Smokey were able to travel with us in the car more often!

| I have this problem as well with my Libby. She is fine on the 'straight' road, but when we go in areas that are curvy, she will get sick. I don't know what to give her either, so I hope I will find a solution on this thread. |
