| When to I have my Yorkie cut?? Isabella is 10 months old about 4 lbs, with silky medium length hair, my question is, do I have her cut now, to get rid of the puppy hair or do I wait. I have never had her cut, just her butt trimmed. I want her to have the longer hair, but I want it to look healthy. Right now its kind of silky but she looks scruffy, I hope you understand. I thought that maybe someone else has gone through this and could help. Thanks Karen |

| From what I understand you're ok after 6 months or so. If you get it cut too early the hair can actually turn completely silver. You should be ok at 10 months. I think I waited till about 8 to get Maggie clipped.. she needed badly though! Maybe wait to see what someone more experienced has to say. Also, you might want to search through threads here about what to tell your groomer. I was pretty specific with mine so that I knew how Maggie was going to turn out. I personally do NOT like Maggie's eyes scooped out, so I always have to mention that.

| We cut Loki before he was 6 months old and since he was about 6 months old he's been to the groomer every 4-6 weeks for a short puppy cut. He is not silver! (I've never heard that?) He turned a year old in November. We never really had puppy hair. Loki does not have a silky coat - he is super thick, fluffy, and if it's longer than about 2 inches it mats easily so i keep him short. I love it though, and planned to do that anyway. I don't see why you can't cut her? If you take her to a groomer just be very specific and maybe even write down what you want.

| I think you can cut their hair whenever you want. Our breeder though told us if we want to grow a nice coat don't cut his puppy hair. We never did beside the usual ear, paw and butt trim. We went through some pretty bad hair stages but it's really starting to be nice now.

| Okay...this is something I know NOTHING about. Ozzie is 10 weeks old...his hair is pretty think, and starting to get in his eyes some. Keep in mind that he is a yorkie/maltese mix...but he has yorkie coloring. So if cutting does affect his coloring...I definitely want to know. At what age do we just do a trim here and there as opposed to a cut? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I just talk to my groomer, and she said that since Izzy hair was very silky, ( she has groomed her before) that she wouldn't cut her because she hair probably look right short and she had groomed another yorkie with Izzy type hair and looked better with it long and maybe a trim once in a while. Said it would come back thick. | |

| My Yorkies puppy hair is terrible (14 weeks old). It is totally matted, oily, thin, and as bad as possible. I am sure this is not a normal thing - it is just him. You couldn't get a comb through this stuff called hair in a million years. So - I have had to cut his hair. And I am continuing to cut this baby stuff off as fast and soon as I can. The coat coming in right behind this baby hair is silver/black (the roots were this color before he was ever cut) - and this new hair is straight, not oily, very nice... and easier to comb. So - my puppy has had several hair cuts. And- he's looking 100% better. I'm beginning to think he is going to have a great coat of hair after all. Carol Jean |

| I got my females hair cut once before I started letting it grow out. It took all the puppy hair out. It looks really pretty now that I am letting it grow out.

| I had mine trimmed when they were little, especially the foot pads so they would not get sore. I've never heard how short a cut would affect the yorkie's color. I brush mine every day so I keep them long as well. But, there is a little layering cut done with Chloe that keeps her cottony coat from looking like she has a bad hair day every day that I like. It kind of keeps the sides slim looking. Lacey has very thin, smooth, fine hair, so she just gets the trims needed. |

Please respond to me on e-mail at jnafleisch@msn.com because everytime I post a response on Yorkietalk, I can't find it the next time I go back. Thanks, Jessica |

| I want my yorkie to have short hair all the time. He's not even 3 months so I will wait till at least 6-7 months before taking him to the groomer. I use a needle brush. Is bristle better? |
