Hi everyone! New here! My name is Jen, and we our boy Hercules will be a year old on August 5. We have had him since December. He was paper trained when we got him, but didn't do too well after we got him home, so we waited til warmer weather, and started taking him outside. He will still pee or poop in the house any chance we get, and hates to go out if its raining, too hot, or after dark, but we are still working on it! He refuses to use pee pads or paper, but does have a favorite spot on our I'd ing room carpet....yuck! He cries in his crate at night, even in our room, but we can't leave him out because of the potty issues. He decided early on that our 11 year old son was his favorite, but really likes any of us. Even with all the problems we are still having, he is still lots of fun to have around. I have learned a lot here from reading this weekend, and am excited to be involved in this knowledgable community!

Welcome Jen. Keep up the training!!! Your little guy sounds stubbborn like most yorkies. My Lucy hates the rain/heat/darkness too. We've worked through those issues. Here's what we do: At night, we take a big lantern (not just a little flash light) with us that lights the roadway. We found if Lucy can see a bit ahead of her, she'll stay out and go. For the rain, we take a large golf umbrella with us and keep Lucy covered while she walks. She hates the raincoat - so we don't use one. Even if I get wet, she can go without getting pelted by drops. For the heat - that's more difficult. We do carry her part of the way & also take her to shady spots. My Lucy starts panting heavily in the heat. As soon as she goes, I scoop her in my arms and get her right back inside & to the water bowl. At all times, we make a REAL BIG DEAL every time she goes outside. Our neighbors think we're nutty alright. I walk with my daughter & we even have a little "hurray" song that we sing to Lucy as soon as she starts to piddle. Finally, we found that Lucy doesn't like grass. She prefers to go in the street. However, she really likes to sniff mailboxes & polls & road signs (for other dogs' pee??) So, as soon as she goes, we dash over to the nearest mailbox and let her take a good long sniff around. It's sort of a reward for her. She expects it now. Good luck. Let us know how it goes! Tracey

I make a big deal of it when he goes. Our neighbors probably think I'm crazy, lol. He will do really good some days, and have no accidents, but some days, I think he gets an attitude, and does it on purpose.

It gets better. Remember: what goes in, must come out! If you have the opportunity to observe him drinking then you'll have an easier time guaging when he has to go. Also, don't graze feed. If you know when he eats, you can predict when he'll go #2. Good luck & welcome again! Tracey
