| First Puppy Hi! So I adopted my first puppy, an adorable little female yorkie. I picked her up last weekend, she is 9 weeks old. I took her to the vet Monday, she weighs 2 pounds. The vet was very impressed with her demeanor though, said she was very sweet and let her do what she needed to. (and then they told me she had a flea!!!!! omg I have no animals at all and she had been at my house for a night. I am still itching thinking about it and I feel terrible for the puppy. Any suggestions on chemical free ways to get rid of them let me know!!!!) Anyway, I have been researching for awhile but I know its nothing compared to the real thing. And that is even clearer now than it was before!!! lol. Right now she is in her crate crying and I am feeling like a terrible mommy! I felt so much more prepared before I actually got her! But I just love her, she follows me around and sits at my feet but still looks scared most of the time. How do I train her or do anything with her without scaring her since she is so young? After reading through the boards I see that a lot of yall say the puppies should not leave until they are older. I completely understand why. Her were already standing straight up at 8 weeks, is that normal? They looked more like chihuahua ears. But she is AKC registered. I am sure I am just being overly... everything. Do I let her cry? How long? SO many questions and everyone has a different answer!! Anyway... this post is so ridiculous... and probably not the best intro bc it makes me sound a little crazy but chalk it up to little sleep for a brand new overly worried mommy!!! So Hi!!!! From Me and Emmie <3 |

| Welcome to YT and congrats on the new puppy! 1st: puppy is crying. Is she near you or in another room? They like to be with you, and if she isn't close, I suggest moving her crate next to the bed so you can put your hand down to her, and also putting a worn piece of your clothing in the crate with her so she can cuddle to your scent. I had my baby in the bed with me from day one. He was 8 weeks old and never had an accident in the bed, but you have to think of that possibility as well as the danger of falling off. I have seen others post that they a. put a mattress on the floor next to puppy at first or b. put the crate in the bed Hopefully close contact will stop the crying. 2nd: the flea Dawn dish soap will kill fleas. My baby is on Trifexis, which is an oral monthly medication to prevent fleas and heartworms. He was a little older when I started the pills. I tried topicals at first, but didn't like how they greased up his hair. Talk to your vet and see what he recommends and what age is appropriate for what treatment. 3rd: As for training, I am not the one to give you a good answer because my brat is not properly trained. I will say, if I could do it over, potty training would be my number one focus. Consistancy is the most important thing. I had mine so confused with indoor potty patch & pads, outside on grass, on the boat, etc, that he is still not fully housebroken at 4 years old. Again, welcome to you and Emmie. You have found the place to learn more about yorkies than you ever thought possible! We need photos!!!

Congratulations on the new puppy. Can't help a whole lot with the training issues, having only done that once a long time ago. I'll leave that to some more experienced ones here. As far as the flea goes, my guess would be she picked it up at the vet's. That happened to me with my mini-Schnauzer once. I almost freaked out too. I saw it on her while still at the vet's office & got it off her; never saw another one on her. She was on K9 Advantix for years. Also, my niece who was a long-time vet tech & vet student, told me to NEVER use Sargent's (& probably any other brand of---just not sure) flea shampoo on such a small animal; she had seen young & small dogs that had actually died from it---too strong for their little systems. My new baby (Milo, the Yorkie) has been on Advantix K9 II (for under 10 lbs) the last 3 months & so far it has worked very well--not a sign or fleas or ticks. It has been a really bad season for them here in my area of Alabama. Of course you need to check with your vet & see what he recommends before doing anything else about it---just call & ask. I'd think they'd be happy to give you that advice over the phone with no charge---mine does. | |

| Welcome to YT. congrats on your new baby. I use K9 advantix II also but I think that I would ask your vet. also get a sock and stuff some other socks inside and tie a knot in it and put it in her crate// it make them think that they are with their mom// it has always worked for me |

| Since the puppy is so young Do not use any over the counter flea medication. Dawn dish soap as Marilyn mentioned will help. Make sure to wash any bedding and vacuum the house well. Did the vet mention what to do about fleas for a puppy that small/young? Welcome to YT!!

| Welcome to YT! I kept mine uncrated when I was home, but still blocked her to only being in the same room as I was. Mine was the age yours was, and peepee pad training was the 1st thing we did since I had to work and she would need to know where she "should" be pottying at. . Your right about reading and getting ready for a pup, but it totally changes once the pup is with you! What ever you try to teach her, be consistent. Be gentle as possible and give a lot of praise for doing the right thing when asked. You're going to be a good yorkie mommy. Enjoy your new puppy, she won't stay in the puppy stage for long!

| You gotta let them cry in the crate overnight and not go to them. My Cookie gave such a sad cry the first night and I so badly wanted to pull her out to lay with me, but it's a horrible idea since she was so small and since my bed is 2 1/2 feet off the ground. So I let her cry and bark herself to sleep all night and she never did it again once she realized she would not get my attention with it. She was 14 weeks the day I got her though. YMMV at 9 weeks.

| Emmie Pictures <3 Thanks so much yall!!!! We had an interesting night! She cried off and on for FOUR hours. When I took her out for her bathroom break and snack she was super hyper, but my mom told me earlier she had slept alot that day while I was at work so we played a little bit. She used the potty pad twice!!! yay! She got lots of love from me on that! So.... we may have had a long snuggle fest after that. Maybe not the best thing but... she IS napping in her crate right now.... UGH this flea... gross. Ok so when I picked her up from the breeder, I noticed this scab on her neck. I asked and she said oh I was going to tell you about that. She had her vaccinations and they bothered her so she was scratching, its from that. I thought it was weird, but what do I know about puppy vaccines? And she was super nice so ok. On Sunday she seemed fine, I noticed she scratched a little on Sunday but not a crazy amount. Monday morning I noticed she had another scabbed area and then another. We went to the vet that morning, I of course was super concerned, the vet looked at her and said oh, its just a flea. "killed it" and that was that. Did have us buy frontline to treat her monthly since she was 8 weeks old. We did that Monday. I vacuumed and washed sheets and bedding but am going to again today. Last night during our cuddle session, she let me comb her for an hour so I parted her hair and searched for little problems. I got rid of some dry patches of skin and found one rouge flea that I think bit her bc she yelped right before I grabbed it and shes been scratching at that spot today. (jerk flea) So she is definitely getting a dawn bath today. I am totally freaking out. I have no animals and little insects like this are making me itch all over. Plus I feel terrible for my sweet baby. She doesnt seem to be bothered too often, but it just sucks that she is bothered at all. Thanks for the help!!! I look forward to getting to know yall!!! |

Cookie cried for two full hours the first night home, since I put her in the crate to sleep. When I let Cookie out to the bathroom that first night I waited until she shut up for 15 minutes so as to not reward her for her crying. She cried for another 10-15 minutes when I put her in the crate again for the night after her 3AM potty trip, but after that slept well.
