| Food and Travel questions Hi, Thanks for all of the good advice about Mia's hyper-ness and biting! Now I have some questions about food! Mia is VERY picky. It sounds like that is not unusual. I usually give her Eukanuba puppy food, and leave it out for her all day. In the morning and evening, I add Cesar's to the top of it. She really ONLY ever eats the Cesars. I tried grinding the Eukanuba into a powder and mixing it with the Cesars, but she wouldn't touch it. She has been eating the Cesars fine--until this morning. She just wasn't interested. Yesterday was a big day out--we went to a reunion at a friend's house. She was perfect all day, but probably overwhelmed with all of the people and new smells and sounds. On the way there, she was freaking out in the car (so far, she HATES to be crated in the car), and vomited all over the crate. When we got there, I had to bath her right away (also not a favorite activity!) So, there was a lot of stress for such a little girl, even though she seemed to enjoy all of the attention once we were there. Anyway, I fed her late last night after we got home (she did eat at the reunion, too!), so I wasn't that concerned that she didn't seem interested in the food. However, by noon she still hadn't eaten and seemed to be pretty tired out, so I was concerned. I got her to take some honey from a baby spoon, and then I fed her some Cesars from a spoon, but she was trembling. I am guessing this was a hypoglycemic episode? It is our first experience with that, and it scared me! The vet had recommended Nutracal--which I bought--but I can't get it into her. She hates it! We ended up with her coat being a sticky mess by the end, so I don't know what to do about getting her to take it. We are going to my husband's family (2 hours away) tomorrow, for 2 days, and I know this is going to be more stress on her. Can anyone give any advice on the Nutracal, on traveling, or on how to get her to eat? Also, if she NEVER eats the Eukanuba, is the Cesars a nutritional diet on its own, or can you recommend something else? I think she has trouble with the hardness of the food. (Though, I bought Eukanuba canned puppy food today and she wouldn't eat it. Tried sprinkling parmesan on it and she just licked it off!) |

| HI! I have a picky eater too. I keep light colored karo syrup for her incase her sugar gets low. Mine also hates nutri cal- pushed it right out of her mouth when I gave it to her. Have you tried boiled chicken with the food you give her? That helps sometimes. She doesn't like the Eukanuba, that's obvious, so maybe get some samples from the companies listed in the Health and Diet section. All you have to do is email them and they'll send you some to try for free. If she's as picky as mine, you just have to keep trying different foods till you find 1 she likes. I even crumbled her favorite treat on top her food to get her to eat. Try frozen peas, carrots, or green beans. She might like those. If she likes cheese, keep using that. I used ground up kibble under the wet food too. Cesars should be ok on it's own. Mine likes Merrik chicken and turkey/ duck flavors for wet food. You could try those. Nutri drops are good to give her if she doesn't like to eat. They promote their appetite. Holistic Tiny bites are a good kibble, they have a coating of nutra drops on them and the kibble bits are really tiny. As for travel...when I'm alone I have a dog seat that sits high so she can see out. I got it online from Target. It looks like a huge cube that you seatbealt into place. There's a tether to attach her harness to, for safety. I haven't gone father than a 30 min. drive though, so I'm no help on a long drive. I hope something works for you. PM if you have questions. I hope others will be here to give you more advice.

| Thank you for the advice! I have chicken in the crock-pot right now and will try that tomorrow. Mia had a lazy day, but no more trembling. I think she was just recovering from all of the excitement yesterday. She "came alive" about 9pm tonight and was running around the kitchen like a rabbit! :-D I looked at the list for the free food samples, but I haven't seen those dog food brands around here, so I thought there would be no point in asking for them. I did see "Merrick" brand today, so I will give that a try, and I will try the peas and green beans. Is it o.k. to feed them to her frozen, or do I need to cook them first? Well, tomorrow will be another adventure! Hopefully the 2 hour car trip won't be too harrowing! I am definitely going to look for the car seat. Do you think it is better for them to be able to see out, or would it be better to have one that blocked her vision? She seems to get more anxious when she looks out the window, but I could be reading that wrong. |

| I would get a carseat where she can see out the car window rather then the crate. Also make sure she has all her puppy shots and has had them for at least two weeks before taking her places or she could get get Parvo or something else and Parvo can kill. Have you tried just soaking the kibble in hot water and then draining it and seeing if she will eat it then? I personally am not a fan of Eukanuba and Ceasers. I prefer Blue Buffalo, Acana, Orjen, Now small breed and there are a few other nice ones out there.

| Thanks, Callie'smommy. She won't eat the food after I've added water. Also, if we only have Mia around people--not other dogs--she should be safe from Parvo, right? I don't know a lot about it, but does Parvo come from unvaccinated and infected dogs? She will probably be in my sister-in-law's back yard in her puppy pen for some of the time. Her yard is fenced in and they do not have any pets. She has also been in our back yard. The people in the house before us had a dog, but it was up-to-date on shots. Is there anything else I need to be careful about? This is a huge learning curve for me! Mia is our first baby! (Well, first baby, anyway!) |

| Be careful about young kids being with her. Make sure they're sitting when they want to hold her. Frozen peas and green beans are ok. Mine played with them 1st, so they partially thawed before she ate them. Here's another thread on traveling- check it out. I saw some good answers on it. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ny-advice.html Free samples- I'm sure you can do online orders for the foods if your pet store doesn't carry it. Or ask a manager to get order for you so you can buy it from them. I'm like you though, I'd rather not cause a fuss and go with what's available. Merrik has small cans at my shop. I started with those, now I get the reg. sized cans and freeze what she gets bored with. We do a rotation with her foods, I put the frozen portion back in the rotation when she's hits it again. (if that makes sense)

| Thank you! You have been a great help! The traveling thread was very informative....and nice to know that I have been on the right track so far. I spend more time packing for Mia than I do for myself--or my 8 year old! It is like having a newborn again! I guess the only thing left to do is get an appropriate car seat that she will like. So far, I haven't had to worry about children too young. My youngest is 8 and she is learning how to be very careful with her. At my sister-in-law's there will be a 7 year old girl, but other than that, no little ones. (I took Mia to my husband's work because the secretary wanted to see her, and SHE almost dropped her when Mia tried to jump out of her arms! It is not only the little ones you have to worry about! I hover around her like a mother hen!) Well, off to finish packing. Hope this goes well! |
