Default I have a Morkie...and a few questions..

I hope I am on the right forum..
I have a Morkie (Mindy) and she is a great dog. I just got her about 3 months ago and she is 3 years old. She is VERY attached to me. Follows me everywhere, listens to me all the time, fantastic dog for me. My problem is the peeing. She does get very excited when she sees me (or anyone really) and will pee from excitement (sometimes rolling on her back and peeing on herself), so when I walk in the house, I dont acknowledge her too much, just open the door, let her out to pee, then I will pet her and say hi. She has no problem wimpering when she has to go out. To me (and for me), she is the perfect dog lol.

Now, when someone ELSE is watching her, or goes to my house to let her out during the day, she cowers on the couch or in a corner and pees. These are people she "knows". She used to go to my parents house every day while I was at work. I told my parents to do what I do when they come in so she wont pee in their house but she wont go outside for them. She just pees. My sister went to my house yesterday and MIndy would just cower on the couch and pee. My sister has taken to having a towel in hand when trying to get Mindy outside to pee.

Is this just an attachment thing? or a training thing? I dont know what to do because she does it for me..just not anyne else.

Advice?

I don't have training advice about the submissive peeing, but I know others will.

I did want to say WELCOME to YT!

Hi and Welcome to Yorkie Talk.

I'm Sandy and I have 3 Morkies, and 1 Yorkie, all girls. When I come home, I walk in the door and do not even stop to greet my 4 excited girls, I walk directly to the back door saying "lets go", and walk out with them and get them outside to pee. If I take too long, one of my little ones does an excite pee on the floor. Once they have all gone out, then we get to finish greeting.

It's hard to tell what is causing Mindy to cower and pee, and is likely a carryover from some experience in her past before you had her.

Is she a rescue, and do you know anything about her past? I think that rescue organizations may have some helpful hints on understanding and retraining a rescue. I don't have any specific experience, but think patience and positive rewards for proper behavior will help her overcome this. Be specific about how friends and family handle the situation, and make sure everybody is consistent in getting her outside to pee, even if they have to lure her with a treat. In my house, that means walking out with them and not just opening the door.

Good luck and keep us posted, and please let us know more about Mindy.

Thank you for the replies...

Maui - Thats exactly what I do when I come home and I told my family to do the same if they are coming over to let her out for me. The problem is that she wont "come" for them. Instaed she makes them come to her and when they do, to pick her up and take her out, she cowers, rolls over and pees. So its really hard for me to train her when she is doing the right thing for ME..but not anyone else.

I dont have contact with the people I got her from but they were a young couple, lived in the city and not sure what they did for training and unfortuantley cant find out.

I will try the treat thing. I will leave some treats my the door and see if that gets her to go to them, then they can giver her the treat after she goes out and does her business.

Sounds like a good plan. Maybe you can "train" the family together, have them walk in with you, do not make eye contact or greet the dog, give the agreed command (at my house it's "let's go") escort her out waving a treat, and then command "pee", and give treat. I'm certainly no trainer, but this is my method and it works...... except when we linger at the door. BTW one of my little Morkies cowers, and I swear it is not from abuse. Her sister does not, nor do the other 2 doggies. It is just her personality, and you'd think someone had beaten her.

They are all such unique little individuals, but the best companions ever. Good luck. Hope to see pictures of Mindy..... we love pictures here.

I think it's wonderful you got an older dog. good for you. Maybe the doggie needs more time to settle in and then all will be fine. I think when our family is ready, we would like a Morkie. I never saw them before and they are adorable. But where on earth do you get them. I've looked and looked but all the places I saw looked like puppy mills?

I am so glad you found a Morkie. I have one that just turned a year in June and he has been my constant companion. The only dog I had that did submissive peeing was my dachshund, we had to make sure we didn't get our voice to excited when saying go pee, otherwise he would go right there. Also, my parents used a treat to lure him outside. They would show him the treat which made him follow them to the door and then they went outside with him for a second. I don't know if that would help or not. Hope you enjoy your little girl, they are great companions.

First off, welcome to Yt! I too have a morkie as well as a shorkie and 2 yorkies... Have you entertained the idea of a potty pad? Then she would not have to rely on other people to let her out.... Mine are all pad trained and it works quite well for us as sometimes we are gone for many hours... Just a suggestion!
