| Unused Puppy Food - What to do? Winnie has a very sensitive stomach and has gone through a lot of different types of puppy food before we finally found something that worked for her. I was just wondering if there is any place that I can donate the puppy food that she is unable to eat? I have some unopened stuff as well as giant bags that are opened but basically none of it has been used. I dont know if there are any rules or regulations in regards to this. Any help would be great, I just hate to waste so much food. I really wish they gave out sample sizes at stores to get before you purchase a whole bag, ugh.

| Samples from dog food companies I can only imagine that your vet or a local shelter would love to have the donation of food. The fact that it is open may present a problem but if you donate to or through someone that knows you like your vet it should be fine. I did not do this and know very little but my neighbor wrote to the dog food companies requesting samples for her dogs. Her dogs have health issues and were picky eaters. I believe most of the companies complied. My vet gave me some samples but only for the brand he carries which makes sense. |

| Depending where you purchased it....I know PetCo told me one time, if I bought something they were trying to sell me, and my dogs didnt like it, all I had to do was take it back and get my money back. Otherwise, rescues and the SPCA and even your vet would probably love the donation....Also, our Meals on Wheels for seniors, also distribute dog food to seniors with pets because they discovered the seniors were feeding their meals to their pets because they couldnt afford to buy dog food, so they were feeding their food to the pet! They will take any food you have to donate! I have a real soft spot for seniors....and I will donate to anything they need, so that is where I send donations of kibble and canned dog food. |

| I've donated open bags of kibble to my local humane society, after I'd bought different food and ZoE didn't like it. My daughter volunteered there in high school and she said people often brought in food, and they would photocopy your driver's license & staple it to the bag (they'd also then use your info to send you a thank you and let you know of other donated items they accept, such as clean linens/blankets/towels, collars, leashes, etc.

| My first thought was animal shelters too Even if it's opened they'd soon go through it before it had a chance to go stale or 'off' I've often given sachets of cat food to the charity I help when mine have decided overnight that they don't like it....even though the little monkeys had previously been licking the pattern off the plate because they wanted every tiny morsel!!!! |

| If your local shelter will not take it, post an ad for it on freecycle or craigslist.

| Like the poster above, I always buy my food from the pet supply places and all of them will take it back, opened or unopened. Shelters around here won't take opened bags because they told me once "Someone might try to poison it." eek but I guess it happens..so anyway I always take mine back. That stuff is expensive! |
