| Best age to take my new Yorkie home I have finally found my new baby Yorkie and am due to collect her in a few weeks. She will be 12 weeks old when I get her home. Firstly - a big thanks to YT for all the help so far - this forum is a great source of info! Secondly - my general Internet searches have told me that 8 weeks is the ideal time to take your new puppy home. However - a lot of YT threads say (strongly!) that 12 weeks is the right time. I've trusted YT and asked the breeder to hold onto my little Pippa for a few more weeks. Can anyone explain why usually 8 weeks is ok, but for Yorkies it is 12 weeks? Is it perhaps because they are so tiny? Thanks! |

| I vote 12 weeks. Puppies can learn a lot from their moms and siblings in that time. Also, Yorkies are tiny to begin with, so the extra 4 weeks gives them time to grow some more and become stronger. I'm not as familiar with larger breed dogs and whether or not they are kept by breeders until 12 weeks. I brought home my second boy, Teddy, at 8 months and like to joke that I wish I had left my first one with the breeder that long. Teddy was perfectly trained at 8 months.

And weight is certainly an issue, but also the added time with Mom and the litter. This gives the puppies much more time to socialize, to learn pack dynamics et al.

Understand a Large breed dog will be going home at about 20 lbs or more at eight weeks old. Hypoglycemia is not an issue at all. But early training with your owner is!

| I've heard 12 weeks for toy breeds and 8 weeks for larger dogs. I feel 12 weeks should be minimum at least, across the board. |

| The more time puppy can stay with mom and litter-mates, the better! They learn so much from each other. A few more weeks with mom may save you hours and hours of training your puppy. Good luck. |

| Definitely 12 weeks. At this age, you have fewer worries... Hypoglycemia is less likely and they get more socialization from their mom/siblings. I'm glad you were able to convince your breeder to keep your puppy for 12 weeks.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Congrats ! i am so glad you found her. Like everyone before me, 12 weeks would be best for toy breeds and 8 weeks for larger dogs. Great work asking the breeder to hold her for a few more weeks. It will make a difference.

| Congrats! I got Henri at 9 weeks (before I even knew about YT) and part of me wishes they had kept him a little longer, he had biting issues due to not being with and learning from his litter mates and mom what was/wasn't acceptable. It was a struggle, but I trained him out of it and he is very well behaved now but it is better to not have to go through it in the first place. I hope this helps!

| Great info I'll see if I can get my pup left with Mum & siblings until 12 weeks too For some reason a lot of UK breeders seem to let them go at around 8-10 weeks....yet Chihuahuas are kept until 12 weeks I haven't started looking yet by the way.....saving up my pennies so it may be around November or as 'late' as March before I get my pup |
