| Heading to the woods... Hi all! In a couple of weeks we will be going on a few days holidays - We rented a cabin in Cypress Hills (Provincial Park). It will be the 1st time Enzo (9months) has ever been camping I guess I'm just thinking out loud wondering how he will be with it all.. Will he bark at every single squirrel, person, dog, bird, ant that wanders by? Will he sleep? Will he enjoy the many walks? Will he put EVERYTHING in his mouth?! Have any of you camped with your furbabies? How was your experience? What were some "must haves" you packed?

YT 1000 Club Member | First of all, you're going to have to get there. You might just take a look at several "traveling" threads, which may make the trip go well/better. See... Traveling with Yorkies - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community I'm not sure if I'd call what you're going to do "camping" given it's going to be in a Cabin. Does it have running water, electricity, hard to advise you without knowing things like that. Those topics related to supplies taken. What we can discuss are two things, Potty and Movement Control. Are you going to take Potty Pads ? If so, I'd suggest that you get a Plastic Bag and place a piece of Fecal Material in it, and, blot a deposit of Urine with a Paper Towel, where you can "scent" the area (Potty Pad) in which you wish potty to take place. If you intend to keep him inside, like overnight, this will give him a reference to where to Potty. You may wish to leave him outside unattended. There may be other things you want to do beside keep an eye on your little one full time. So, I'd suggest a 25' Retractable Leash/Reel, with a short piece of Rope, where you could tie the Reel to a Tree or your Vehicle, where he could have limited "roaming" ability outside. If 25' is insufficient, you might buy a longer piece of Nylon Rope and a Snap Hook, and make a long Leash yourself. I hope you have a good Harness for him. I don't think you're going to have much of a Barking problem. Given his age, I think he probably will "hide" psychologically in that environment rather than "announce". An older animals protective instinct would/may cause barking, I don't think he's there yet. I'm not sure what else to talk about, you have any specific questions ?

| I go camping with Jackson but we're in an RV. We use ex-pen fencing to create a little 'yard' so they can just go out the RV door without worrying about running away. I like to have his long line (50ft leash), his 26ft retractable leash, and a regular 6ft leash for different situations. I always have poop bags on me. I bring 2 collars and harnesses so we can swap around for looks but also if for some reason one were to get lost or something. Always have ID tags on them. Make sure I put flea/tick meds on him. I will bring wipes and dog shampoo in case he gets disgusting (which is highly likely, he enjoys rolling in things, lol). My dads dogs and Jackson do bark when they're all 3 together and dogs walk by the RV. When Jackson is by himself, he's totally fine, he's not reactive really. Ummm I am trying to think if that's all... I can't think of what else extra I do.

| We took our GSD camping once. Once. She was evicted for barking at the dogs in the neighboring campsite. We felt great shame. Haven't tried camping with Abigail yet. |

Our absolute best camping and it was camping with tents et al, was at Lake Superior Provincial Park here in Canada. It was our first time, ordering and getting a campsite that had electricity! Wow what a difference that made to life. We felt like we were at the Ritz. But the folks up in Northern Ontario, really get dogs! Such a refreshing change. Magic our big boy, was quite young then, and also very guardy. He was quite the hit as no-one had ever seen a BRT before. Folks would apologize if they wandered in too close to our campsite and he gave a warning bark or three They knew what kind of dog he was, just be looking at his size and demeanour. That is a guard dog. They knew how to approach us, and always asked permission to say hello to Magic. And they also had trained their children how to approach or not, strange dogs! Such a treat for me. So Magic had a coterie of kids following us when we went to the doggie beach for his absolute love of retrieving a toy out of water. I allowed some children to throw the toy into the water for him. They were thrilled! Thrilled to see him come back, sit when told, heel around etc. And that big boy obeyed their commands! How much fun was that! The only close encounter of any negativity we had was with a strange man on the beach who wandered too close to Magics kids, and Magic went into a very aggressive mode. I was there of course. And stopped Magic, but that man made a very sharp turn away from our little group. As well he should have..... I firmly believe there was something off about that strange man. Why in an almost empty beach except for us, would you make a beeline for a group of kids?

| We've gone tent camping with our GSP before and we only got in trouble for letting be off leash. He has a great fear/dislike of being tethered (he was attacked while tethered when he was a pup and has hated it ever since) so any time we tether him he cries. If we let him off he'll sit in the same spot and be awesome and quiet though. Anyway, last Labor Day weekend we brought Blazer up to our friend's cabin. He LOVED it! He won over DH on that trip by showing off his hunting skills and being absolutely wonderful. He didn't even mind the fireworks, so that was great! He was still little at the time, hasn't even had his first grooming yet- so 3 months old maybe? The only thing I couldn't get him to do was try to swim. Maybe over the 4th this year... |

We had her 13 years and I loved that dog more than I can tell you. She developed Canine Degenerative Myelopathy late last year and on Easter morning this past March, she told us she had had enough and asked us to release her. So, with heavy hearts, we went to the animal hospital and I held her while she took her last breaths. When it was over, I cried like an 8 year old. While I love my new puppy Abigail, I still miss my Chatty. Isn't it funny how attached we become? | |

I have been and am continuously amazed by how committed our animals are to us, and how infrequently we are able to interpret their actions in our behalf. Though my personal ability to do this is limited (being human), I can at least promise them, I WILL pay attention. HA HA HA, a BRT, if you mean a Black Russian ! I'm surprised if anyone came within 50 yards of your site, with him looking at them, regardless of his age, those guys don't need to bark. I like to go camping, but, having a PortaPotty and an Electrical outlet, make things SO much better. Besides general night lighting, I have a little Auto on/off Electric Heater which I use in the Tent (has a tip switch). I've done much of my camping in Colorado. Rather cool nights there

Senior Yorkie Talker | Hi, we used to camp when Merlin was an only child lol.. and he loved it, it was a big adventure sleeping in the garden, as he thought I'm sure... at first he would have a little grumble at voices and such but after a little while and a few prompts he was fine. We had a ground tether for him so he was leashed all the time but with freedom to come in and out of the tent as he pleased

There are no words in any language, to adequately describe those feelings. They say, "We are their World". I consider that a privilege.
