| Hello Everyone :-) My name is Amanda and I am a proud new owner of our wonderful Yorkie Tobias (my boyfriend decided as a little nod to Arrested Development). This is the first time I've ever had a Yorkie or a little dog for that matter, but we both love him dearly. He's super laid back but loves to go on long walks. He loves people, especially little kids, loves other dogs, but the verdict is still out on cats. I grew up around big dogs. My family still has our English Lab, Princess who turned 13 today who is the biggest baby and wishes she could be a lap dog. My aunt and uncle had huskies since they've been married and my dad cousins have had muts and golden retrievers. My landlord gave us a 25lbs weight limit for a pooch about a month ago, and I went on the hunt. My boyfriend also wanted something a little bigger because he grew up with Brittany Spaniels and English Springer Spaniels, so I was pushing that 25lbs weight limit as much as I could until last Wednesday I met my angel. Tobias, or Toby, was originally named Brutus and was from a county away. He was found by the Preston County Humane Society because his old owners didn't want him anymore and left him out for the coyotes to get They did find the owners and I guess their rat, I mean Chihuahua didn't get along with him so they just let him run off and didn't want him anymore. After being there a week and being fixed, I came in just in time to actually see another dog that was on petfinder. After not being as impressed as what I thought, I was about to leave when a girl walked in with him. I assumed he was hers because he just walked beside her no problem. I started asking her about him and he walked over jumped on my lap and starting licking my face. It was love at first lick. That Friday my boyfriend and I came back and picked the little guy up and he has been a joy ever since. He's my little shadow and has separation anxiety when he's left alone, but other than that he's housebroken and behaves so well. He's 2 and I didn't think Yorkies could be this chill. I hope to get to meet you all and find out your wonderful stories. I am now an official Yorkie fanatic <3 |

| He is super handsome! I just got my first yorkie as well and also have always had/been around with big dogs. I just had to have my older Rottweiler put down due to cancer and still have one 120lb female Rottweiler. The biggest adjustment for us has been to watch the floor when walking, because it's very easy to step on/trip over a yorkie compared to a rott! And I'm not used to the licking/toe biting thing (not sure if this is all yorkies or just mine ) Good luck with everything. I have found lots of helpful advice in this forum since I joined a few days ago. ~Tricia

| Yeah, it was kinda funny to see them both together this past weekend at my parents. He does kiss quite a bit more than my lab, but she gave kisses too not too the extent of him. Toby just has lots of personality in a little package. They are such sweet dogs :-) I would like to find someone else who has a rescue because he is having such a hard time when we both are gone, and even when I leave and my boyfriend is still here he'll pace toward the door till either my boyfriend plays with him or I come back if it's just a short time, and if we're both gone he'll scratch at the door for at least an hour |

| Congratulations on joining all of us other Yorkie lovers on YT & on your good luck to find such a gorgeous little sweetheart. I too adopted my little Milo 3 months ago from a local rescue & he is the sweetest baby you can imagine---no trouble at all except he is not really interested in eating or drinking. We're working on that. We don't know who got luckier---him or us. Like your BF, my DH also wanted a bigger dog, but once Milo was in his lap it was a different story. If you don't know much about Yorkies, and I didn't, you can learn sooo much here. There are wonderful, helpful people here always ready to give you an honest, intelligent answer to your problems or questions. Please learn as much as you can about the breed---different dog foods, habits, etc. Also, please don't ever put a collar on your little boy b/c Yorkies are prone to collapsed tracheas, etc. Please post more pics when you have time & keep us updated on Toby's life with you two. |

| Thank you all for the advice. I think animals know when you give them a second chance I tried to read a couple of books on Yorkies and knew about the trachea collapsing, but I appreciate that you're looking out for my little one too. Today is much better with leaving him alone. I've been working on it all day, trying not to greet him until he's calmed down and left for 5 mins at a time, like what the post from Cesar said. He still barked a bit but he's calming down and not waiting at the door anymore. Also to prove my bf loves him as well. |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk! I got your private message about seperation anxiety. I would start keeping him in a certain area while you are gone, whether it's in the bathroom, cordoned off in the kitchen, wherever that you think is safe for him. Then make sure he has toys to play with, water and maybe even food. Try to give him things to focus on. Then start leaving for short periods of time and coming back to him. Praise him when he calms down and reassure him. He is probably stressing that you are going to leave him forever, so just think about that. He will adjust eventually when he realizes that you are here to stay
