| Puppy shots Charli is my 13 week old yorkie puppy. She is very small and only weighed 1.14 lbs at 9 weeks and now at 13 weeks she weighs 2.4 lbs. She had her first 5 in one shot at 6 years. At 9 weeks she got the collick and it brought on pneumonia and had to wait til 10 weeks to get her second puppy shot after she was well. Yesterday, she received her 3rd puppy shot and the vet said she didn't need the 4th one and that all she had left was her rabies shot. She didn't give her the rabies because she said her size was to small to take them both at same time and I need to wait 3 weeks and come back for rabies. I want to wait til she is 6 months old for rabies because I know with small yorkies sometime it can kill them if given to soon. Any ideas on whether to give a 4th puppy shot and waiting on rabies? Section 3-7A-2 I don't know whether there is any exemption for the size or health of the animal. Again, ask your vet and/or get a second opinion. | |

| BTW, my Bella weighed 3 pounds at 12 weeks and got both her puppy shots and her rabies vaccination at the same time. She just slept it off for a few hours, but each dog is different in how they react to vaccinations. |

| Both of my boys, one who was the same size as yours received fourth shots at 15 weeks and then rabies at 18 weeks. They separated out the rabies so they were over four months and given separately |

| Thank you all. I have a call in to the Tuskegee University Small Animal Vet Clinic. I Gave them all the information and the Doctor is going to call me back and let me know what she thinks. I am not going to give the Rabies shot til she is 6 months old. She is never outside alone and always with me. That gives her 3 months more to gain some more weight before being vaccinated for the rabies virus. I just think it is very weird not to want to give the 4th vaccine for parvo/distemper (5 in 1). |

| That's not suggested though and can be very bad and dangerous for small dogs!

| I think a lot of your vet to wait on the rabies shot...so many vets just lump all those shots together and it can really knock the wind out of their sails....I would wait until that baby is 6-8 months old for her rabies shot....you just have to be careful she is not exposed to any mammel that carries rabies until that time....I do not know how different States handle the "law" about having rabies shots at 3 months of age...do the vets contact the Rabies Police and report you? Who really knows you have not given your tiny baby the rabies shot? All my owners, except the ones that have gotten a larger pup from me, they all wait on the rabies shot until the baby is 6-8 months old, and they do not get it with any other shot. |
