| New to Yorkie Talk Hey GUYS, Pretty new to all this, just got a puppy yorkie about 17 days ago, shes 3 month old and her name is Paris. She was doing great in the beginning, got a hang of the puppy pads, no barking, and minor nibbling, but now everythings total opposite. Shes still using the puppy pads, but the problem is that she tears them up and pulls on the so when she does that she ends up doing an accident. WE KEEP HER IN A LARGE PLAY PEN THAT I PURCHASED WITH HER FOOD BED TOYS AND PUPPY PADS INSIDE SO ITS PRETTY BIG AND SHE STILL HAS SPACE TO RUN AROUND. SHES IN THERE FOR AT LEAST 7-8 HRS BECAUSE I WORK. Once we get home and she notices we're there all she does is bark, im getting the thought that its just for attention, i try and try to ignore it but i just feed in and take her out because its to much. i try to play with her as much as possible before bedtime which is at 11-12pn , but when i do every thing is biting and growling. i just want some helpful tips on stopping her from nibbling on everything even my fingers and nose and her BARKING ! Thank you !!! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | She sounds like a little spitfire . Try not to worry too much, she is probably teething right now and so everything is about their mouth. Also, dogs learn socialization skills at this age, and also with their mouth. Just be patient and keep re-directing her to a toy rather than to your hands. She will learn, but it will take time...these puppies have so much energy and learning to do, so it does wear you out a little . As for the pads, what about trying washable pee pads? At first, you could anchor them w/ something heavy like bricks or cinder blocks so that she un-learns the behavior. Then, you later take away the weights and then she'll hopefully still leave the pad alone. If you're going to use pads long term (like many of us here do), you may want some washables anyway. And, WELCOME to YT - looking forward to learning more about your kiddo.

| Wylie's Mom gave great advice on the pee pad issue. I'll take a shot at playtime. Yes her barking when you get home is an attention seeking ploy. If you can handle it, ignoring is a good attempt to stop it. Once she quiets down then praise her for being quiet and take her out of her playpen. Nipping and growling is normal during play. Try to re-direct her attention to toys instead of you when she does. Also, if you are sitting on the floor when you play, you are then on equal ground so she thinks you are a litter mate and will bite more. It's hard especially when they are little but if you can play standing or sitting on furniture and her still on the floor. That should cut down on the nipping. The growling imho is simply their way of having fun. Much like kids laughing and screaming when they play and are having fun. Bentley is almost 7 months and he growls much more now during then when he was little. The sound of him growling as he runs after a toy is the funniest thing. Sounds more like grunts. Just play, play, play and more play. My motto is a tired puppy is a good puppy. lol 3 moths is about where my angel turned into a bit of a devil. Thinks that age is the dog equivalent of the terrible twos. It does get better.

| Hi, Your breeder should have told you what to expect with a new yorkie baby. It's quite normal for your yorkie to seem so quiet and gentle the first week or two. She's adjusting to her new environment. Then, her "puppy" comes out. That doesn't mean that you have a bad natured dog at all. It does mean that your baby requies training, patience and love. Being out of the home for 7 -8 hrs a day is a LONG time for a puppy. It's plenty of time for a puppy to develop destructive behaviors. It would be nice if someone could see her mid-day for a little while to give her some attention and time out of the pen. It's difficult at this age to use a "day care" service because she's probably too young. But we're just reaching the summer months. I bet you could get a local High School student very cheaply to stop in several times per day and to help with training. I'll be getting another puppy in August. I'll have my 3 kids at home for a month before school starts. I'm putting them to work (but I don't have to pay anything because I feed them!) Don't freak out. There are solutions to most puppy problems. She probably needs some stuff to chew on and keep her occupied. When I go out, I do leave the tv on. Although my Lucy doesn't pay much attention to it (except when the Dog Whisperer is on), I think the sound is comforting. If your puppy's big enough, you may want to also try a Thundershirt for comfort. Good luck, things will improve. Tracey |

| P.S. If you do hire a student to help during the day, then I'd recommend crate training. Not everyone here is a proponent of that method. I found, however, that as long as your puppy gets out at regular intervals, it can be an effective training method. Good luck. Tracey |

| THANKS GUYS, my mother has been going every chance that she gets even if its for 30-1hr, its just when we get home shes jumping around. i just learned about the tv/ radio thing so ive been doing it for the past couple of days. I do sit with her and play maybe thats some thing that i can change. When she is hyper and running around she'll tend to run away from me,lol, and when i do catch her and pick her up to pet her and try to calm her down she just tries to nip at my hand. I am currently giving her Bil Jac training treats as thats what her vet recommended. With the pee pad i put the play pen on top of it to hold it in place so she wont tear it but she still finds a way to take it out, in the beggining she was ok with it not she just removes it every chance she gets, when i am aware of it i just stop her right away ! You guys are great ! |

| YOU GUYS ARE GREAT ! the playpen is actually always on top of her puppy pad so thats whats holding it into place. I am playing with her while im sitting down so that is something i should stop. i just learned about the tv/radio and ive been leaving the radio on while we are working. my mom goes and checks on her every chance she gets even if its for a quick 30min-1hr. she is a very hyper one im guessing because of the play pen, as soon as i take her out she just runs like no other, then when i try and grab her to calm her down she'll give me a little grawl and try and nib on my hand but i still grab her. Most of the time we just try to play with her until shes tired enough and ready for sleep. She is getting the hang of the "sit paris" command, the treats help alot, i am giving her Bil JAc training treat as thats what her vet recommended. i know it takes time and patience, i've been looking into getting a clicker so i can try and train her some more. i just hate to see those puppy pads in pieces and a waste of money, and the barking is just getting louder. Sometimes i feel as she just doesnt listen to me... my sweet ol paris!! |
