| Terrified of car rides? My puppy pukes everytime I put him in the car :-/. Everytime he has been in the car before is because he's going to the vet, he throws up after the vet or when the vet is giving him the shots. He didnt throw up when I first got him and it was 1 hour car ride. Yesterday, I took him on a little car ride around the block and he threw up all over :O I thought, ok maybe he gets car sick, but today I put him in the car and as soon as I turned it on, he threw up!! So is this because he thinks he's going to the vet? What should I do? I can work with him and make him realize when we are going on a car ride is "fun time" BUT we have a vet appoinment in two weeks and then I'll be back to square one! I am so bummed! I got this pretty tiny car booster for him and I was so excited to take him out! Now it's all covered in vomit LOL

| Take him to get ice cream and go to Petco to let him pick out a toy.. Hopefully he'll think that he's going to get ice cream or a toy every time. |

| like people some dogs are just more prone to car sickness, and it does not always have to do with fear. Talk to your vet and see what they think and ask if you should try Dramamine or something like that. One of my dogs always felt ill with car rides even though he liked going places, for rides of more than an hour I would give him a tiny piece of Dramamine, but I would not suggest you do anything like this without talking to your vet. I just thought of something, you said he threw up before you went anywhere, fear does set in at some point because it also could be that he now knows the car makes him feel sick, that's how it was with my dog, he would pull on his leash away from the car anytime I got near of it, because he knew he would get sick once inside, it really is hard to tell if it's the fear or the fact that the motion really makes him ill, sorry for this dilemma.

| How soon before you take him in the car does he eat/drink? Maybe withholding his food and water an hour or so before going out in the car would help him from vomiting all over. Or he could really just get car sickness easier than most. My female, Izzy, shakes when she is in the car but doesn't vomit and my male, Jack, loves car rides (even if its just in the driveway LOL).

| Were something like 90% of the car rides involved going to the vet? If so, you might be right. Maybe you can incorporate something fun at the vet. Perhaps a that "special" treat he'd do anything for. I remember one of my niece having problems visiting the vet so she started giving him a hambergur after each visit. (She has a dalmation) It worked great for her so... *shrug* In the meantime, I guess you should put a cover on the booster seat so it'd be easier to clean up. Both my pups not only vomited but also had diarrhea in my car few times. -_-; SEAT COVERS!!!!!! |

| My be use a crate some prefer the enclosed space to make the feel safer similar to a cat. For the next two weeks work on training. Put him in the car, for about 30 seconds, then take him out and give him a treat like Cheerios. Then repeat this a few times. They doing this once in the morning and then again at night. Do this for a couple days. Gradually increase the amount of time just sitting in the car. Do not drive for the first week. Then after doing this for a week, put him in the car and drive down the street, turn around and give treat once out of the car. Do this a few times gradually increasing the drive. If you do this, be patient and go slow. He will associate car with treats and good things. This will give you an idea if it is fear or car sickness. When going to vet buy special treat. Feed small breakfast so pup is hungry for treats later. Drive to vet park a few stores down from vet if possible. Get him out of car and give small piece of special treat. Walk to the vet office (unless to young then carry him). When outside office door give him another piece of special treat. Walk inside office, give several pieces of special treat. Keep giving treat off and on while waiting. Once enter exam area give treat again. Keep giving treats during exam. Give treats when leaving office. Your goal is to associate vet with yummy treat. My treat sizes are about the size of my finger nail. They don't need big amounts just that taste. My teddy preferred boiled chicken. I made it ahead of time then put it in a baggy and carried it in lunch container with ice pack to keep fresh. My boy hated the vet but now he loves visiting her because it means special treats. If he is still throwing up than it is motion sickness. |
