| Need Support Hello, I am new here and hope this is the right place to go. I have a 15 year old Yorkie/Pom mix named Knarly. I have had him since he was 6 weeks old. This dog is my baby, my life and my best friend. He got me through some really, really tough times...where people abandoned me, he was always there. Last year, Knarly stopped eating. Up till then, he has been super healthy and we had never been to the vet for any other problems. He needed a dental, which the vet said he should have yearly from now on. He did great after that, and as time passed, so did another year and I took him back in for another dental. A couple hours later, the vet called and said he had a continuous heart murmur and didn't feel it was worth the risk for a dental. It was right after that, things started to slide. It is going so quickly, he has good and bad days, but I never know when he may stop eating and lethargic. I had to start giving him soft food just so he could eat and he has been doing fairly ok for the most part. But yesterday, he started panting and breathing heavy. He couldn't get comfortable, he kept trying to adjust, brace himself, squeaked a bit and vomited a couple times. I called the vet crying, begging for them to see him. I thought it was the end for sure and even putting him to sleep had creeped into my head, but he then started to snap out of it just a little before we were heading to vet. The vet was great with him, and amazed how active and physical he was for his age. He confirmed the heart problems and a UTI. He put him on antibiotics and I/D. He said to watch for a purple tongue if he has another attack, because it meant his heart wasn't working properly and he wasn't getting oxygen. He said there wasn't much I could do other than just try to comfort him through it. Things were pretty much back to normal like nothing had happened, but today, about the same time, he had another attack. I noticed the tongue, it was indeed purple. I lightly wrapped him in a towel like a burrito, massaging and talking softly to him....he slowly relaxed into a calm sleep. I started crying because I know his time is getting shorter. The vet said we need to treat the infections first as they will attack the heart, then look into maybe some pills for his heart. I am hoping to find others who maybe have more experience with things like this or even just someone who understands. I'm just feel so alone. I am sorry this is so long. |

| I don't have any advice for you but I couldn't read your heartfelt post and not comment. You sound like such a loving mama to Knarly. ((Hugs))

| My heart goes out to you. I haven't been though your exact situation, but I have lost a fur friend that was with me from 12 weeks of age to 14 yrs. It's a tough time watching them getting older, and knowing the time you have left with them is short. I hope someone else can help you more. Prayers to you and Knarly. If that's him in your avatar, he's a cutie!

| Hi and Welcome to YT. Sorry your little one is not doing so well. Your vet sounds like he has a good plan, I hope your little one begins to improve. My guy is now too old for dentals also so I just do what I can with antibiotics and a lot of prayers. We take each day and hope nothing bad happens.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome. I am sorry to hear about Knarly. Hopefully they can get him on some heart medicines soon. My friend has 2 cavaliers with bad heart murmurs and the medicines have helped a lot.

| My heart goes out to you along with prayers for your sweet baby. You are such a good mommy. I lost my mini-Schnauzer last Sept in a similar situation so I can feel your pain. She was almost 13 & I got her when she was 12 wks old. She was my best friend & confidant. Hugs for you. |

| Hello.....you and Knarly have had a wonderful lifetime together....I think it is a tyestament to both of you, for his 15 years of life! I also had a baby with congestive heart failure....we startede with a murmur when she was around 8 and she was put on medication which was adjusted as necessary over the next 9 years.....I would recommend you take Knarly to a specialist in cardiology.....they can adjust his meds so that you should have a couple more years together....unfortunately, we outlive our best friends and that is always sooooo hard to see them go on ahead, with out us.....but I dont know that he has gotten to that juncture yet....with medication, he should be with you a while longer.....enjoy the time you have left with your baby boy....let him know for sure, he is the best friend you have ever had.....I feel your heartache....we all go thru this so we know and understand..... |

| Bless you and Knarly. You have given each other a lifetime of love and loyalty. Sending prayers that the infection can be cleared up and treatment started for his heart. No matter how many years we get with our little friends, it's never enough time for the love and happiness they give us.

| Thank you everyone for your kind replies. Shortly after I posted, Knarly went into another attack. This time I just automatically picked him up and wrapped him in towel. It seemed to help a lot more, as before I was trying not to make it worse by moving him. He is not eating well at all today, though he seems alert and in good spirits. I'm not sure if he just doesn't like the I/D or what, but he did eat it yesterday. :/ If he doesn't eat by later today, I will try cooking him up some rice and chicken...my go to method during these times. It is really hard to get him to take his meds [liquid form] and he fights me every inch of the way. I am wondering if anyone knows when I should start to see improvement there? I have another appointment with my regular vet [I took him to a different vet this last time as mine couldn't see him until next day and I just couldn't stand sitting back watching him suffer] on the 11th that I all ready had scheduled from before...so I am hoping we can look into those other options or at least make a plan if not. Thanks again |
