| potty woes I know I should go to the training forum, but I really need some advice. We have 3 dogs. Max is nearly 15 years old. He is not an issue. He goes out about 3 times a day and does his business. The rest of the day he lays on the couch. Barney is 5 1/2 months old. We are working on potty training. He gets it right about 70% of the time. Rarely any poo accidents. But he pees a lot and we don't always read his signals. Lana (We are calling her Anna--she doesn't respond to any name) is a 6 year old rescue dog. She came into our house last Thursday. She is great, but has never gone potty outside before living here. Fortunately, she doesn't use her crate. I was worried about this because she was used as a breeding dog and was crated a lot. She goes pee at pretty regular intervals and poos once a day at about the same time. The problem is getting her to go outside. I literally have to take her out and wait hours for the magic to happen. I have been keeping a journal since last Thursday of every time any of them eat, drink, pee or poo. Anna is regular inside, but when I take her out at about the time the event should take place, we have to walk forever for it to happen. She usually poos at 5 pm. I took her out at 4:45 and waited until 7 yesterday. When it finally happened, I cheered and gave her hugs. She was very excited. She ran around jumping in circles. But then when it was time for her 8:00 pee, nothing. I waited outside with her until 9:00. She never went. I finally put her in her bedtime crate and we went to sleep. She woke up dry and went out this morning. She peed after about 10 minutes. But she kept trying to walk to the door to go inside. My concern is this. I have read the 7 day book. It says to give them a very rigid schedule which includes daily crate time. I am wondering if I should stick to putting them in the crate or if I should just continue allowing them access to the house. Barney is not so well behaved in the crate. Anna is a doll wherever she is. She is a very easy going girl. Seems happy to be near us in any capacity. So far today Barney has had two pee accidents and Anna has had one. I am worried that the way I am doing it, they will never understand that we are out there for a purpose. Does anybody with experience using the 7 day plan or house breaking an older dog have any advice? I would appreciate any help I can get. |

| I have not, but I’m bumping this up for you.. I think you should also have this moved to the training section. I have a 6 year old male Yorkie and he thinks my house is his personal restroom- he does what he wants. Sometimes he goes on his pad, sometimes he will go outside, and sometimes he will pick a spot on the floor to go- it really depends on his mood at the time!
