| Liver shunt My Ozzy, 2 years old is getting tested for liver shunt. I won't know the results for a few hours. He had 8 seizures yesterday. He was diagnosed with epilepsy in December and has been on phenobarbital since. All his follow up blood work has been normal. His behavior has been different and his seizures more frequent. Poor guy, he's not his usual pain in the ass,I miss that..my vet is excellent. After witnessing what she saw yesterday, she hopes its a liver shunt problem.. He's always been an organic dog food eater, plenty of exercise and healthy besides his epilepsy. My heart tells me his seizures are caused by maybe a malfunctioning liver? |

| How does he act when he is having a seizure? Liver shunt dogs usually pace and stagger around. I pray your boy will be okay.

| Liver Shunt A lot of liver shunt dogs have seizures due to the toxins building up when the liver no longer filters. I had a 9 1/2 yr old and that was the first symptom.

| Liver shunt When he initially had seizures, they were the usual seizure mode. Fighting back swallowing the tongue, legs swimming, convulsions, agitated. As time wore on after two months on phenobarbital,he was getting 1 a month but for the last 6 weeks he was having them weekly but his seizures changed. He would bump into walls, fall onto the floor and and scoot around like a seal, hide from us, want to burying himself in a chair.his personality changed a lot but I felt that something else was wrong.. Very weird. Under the vet care I was told to double his dose after a seizure. Yesterday he had 8 seizures. 2 at home and the rest at the vet. He was bought at a pet store in LA. Unbeknownst to us,the state has had them on a watchdog list because they sell sick puppies. Ozzy was a perfectly healthy, thriving, housebroken, playful puppy, quick learner. I watched the YouTube video on ginger, the yorkie and Ozzy displays the same mannerism as ginger who has a liver shunt...it's all very upsetting. I spend hours and hours a day with him. I know him so well,so I knew he there has to be more than just epilepsy. The results will be in later today or tomorrow. If its not liver shunt and is epilepsy,I hope that all these seizures haven't caused permanent damage.. |

| My 3yo yorkie started having seizures this past week. I didn't know what she was doing, she was lifting up her leg to her chest and was shaking scared while licking the air. She looked so confused, it was so sad. It only lasted a few seconds the first time. About 2 weeks later (last night) it happened 3 times.. Only lasted about 20 seconds each. I was a little in denial about it until I looked on Youtube to get confirmation of what a seizure was. We took her to the vet this morning, sent blood work, etc. Today has been good, she's a little sleepy. When she was around 6 months she had liver issues but the bile tests came back okay after a year. She did also get vaccines a month ago, only the necessary and it has been 2 years since she's had them done. (I don't believe in vaccines, especially since mine don't leave our private yard or car when out) Please keep us updated on your yorkie. I hope my Bebe will be okay and that this is just a fluke thing. We have meds incase another seizure arises and we will await the bloodwork for further action. |
