| Yorkie (Mixed) Ears question... Hi Everyone, I've got this great little girl named Pixel, and she is a Yorkie mix (the Yorkie is the dominant genetic breed and the Griffon only shows through her slightly shortened snout and mixed hair/fur coat). Because she is a mixed breed, I'm confused about what I should (or shouldn't) do about her ears. First Ear up - 9 1/2 weeks Second Ear up - 11 weeks Both ears stood completely erect until 14 weeks. Now closing in on 14 1/2 weeks, her ears have begun to flop on the upper 1/3 of the ear. I've searched this subject both in this forum and on Google, and while there is advice for if the ears do not stand on their own, this is different because they went up and stayed up without a problem for weeks before suddenly flopping again. Is this the result of her mixed breed? I do have to point out that she has tremendously large ears, and as a standard Brussels-Griffons have floppy ears. A few additional things to note: -Her hair is not a "weight" on her ears because of her mixed coat. -The cartilage from the middle to the base of the ear is very firm and well developed. -Our vet has confirmed that Yorkie is the dominant genetic breed in her accounting for near 80% of her physical and mental characteristics. So what I need to know is, do I tape her ears as though they didn't go up on their own? Do I leave them because she is a mixed breed? Do I wait and see what happens over the next few weeks? What is best for her? Thank you so much for your time :-) Now that I've signed up instead of trolling (is that the right word) the forums, I hope to become an active participant with a great group of people :-) RaisingPixel (aka Angie) |

BANNED! | Hi & welcome! I'm sure someone else can prolly answer this better then me.. But if u can't shave some hair off so the ear is lighter, then maybe try taping them. It couldn't hurt. Just make sure u research how to tape them so u do it correctly. Also a pic would prolly help some of the other members to answer u better. Good luck! |

| Sometimes ears flop during teething, but they should pop back up. I'm not positive if her floppy ears have anything to do with the Griffon in her. There's never a "right answer" when it comes to a mixed breed. You just never really know what traits the pup will pick up from each side. If her ears are really big, it might be the weight of her actual ear causing the flop. Even if you shave the hair on the ear, the actual ear could still be too heavy. Do you have a picture? If you really want them to go up, you can tape them as if they never went up & check them after a few days. It wouldn't hurt. I have a Yorkie/Maltese mix & she has one floppy ear. It's cute though, so I never taped them. Good luck! Welcome to YT

| I would still trim and shape the hair on the top part of the ears if you want them to stand completely erect. I'd do that before taping. My Blazer is 3/4 Yorkie and 1/4 Shih-Tzu. His ears stand up except the tips- one ear bends down just a little and the other sort of twists a little. I love how his ears look! But anyway, mixed or not I'd trim the hair first then worry about taping. They could be droopy right now due to teething so a little shave could perk them right back up. |

| Thanks for the advice - I am able to upload a photo if that would help? I'm just not sure how to do that from my iPhone/iPad... I do think she is adorable as she is, however I do want to do what's generally appropriate for the 'dominant breed' by "standard". I don't see the hair causing a "weight problem" as she has a mixed coat - her coat is generally like a Brussels-Griffon (short), but then her coat is laced throughout with these long black and silver Yorkie Hairs. She's actually quite unique! I do think I ought to find a way to post a picture because she's really somethin' else :-) |

| How do I edit a post? I just found out that my definition of "trolling" in my initial post is very different than the Internet slang version... I meant extensively researching or observing, I in no way meant the internet slang version of the word lol |
