| Playpen or puppy room? I need a little advice here. I am picking up my puppy in 15 days, and I am wondering where should I leave him while I am away Mon-Thurs for 4-5 hours. I have a pretty big bathroom that I am able to close for him, however it doesnt have a window, and it's kinda dark, even though theres light from the room outside and he can see a window that is outside but far away. I was thinking about leaving a little light on and maybe some music or the tv on. OR should I get a playpen and set it up in the living room next to a window. I just dont want my puppy to be depressed or lonely, but I have to go to work so I can afford him! Lol I am trying to figure out whats best for him. My bf is going check on him once during that time to make sure Bentley is ok, but wont he start peeing on the pads and then think is ok to pee in the living room. :-/ |

| One thing that will work is to buy an expen and a wood paneling to put the expen on if you have carpet. Attach the expen to the front (each side of the door) and make sure the door can't close. Drape a blanket over the wire crate, making it den like. Put a pad in the crate with a little blanket. Attach a pet water bottle to the side of the expen. Put a couple of very safe toys, like hard rubber that don't have any bells or squeekers, a small beef femur bone, boil a couple minutes and remove the marrow,(they can't splinter those) and a washable pee pad. You could put a few kibble in a puppy Kong to keep him busy and something to eat while your gone. Turn the TV on really low and on cartoons, like Sponge Bob. If you want to take it a step further, you can buy scented plug ins that calm pets.

| X-pens are good ideas but I really think it is best to get one with a top on it since these pups can climb like cats! The bathroom is another good idea as long as you puppy proof the room and use a good secure pet gate. The gates used for kids can easily be scaled by a determined puppy. Falling over the other side could cause injury. A good pet gate can't be scaled and is good because the pup doesn't feel locked away from the rest of the house. One that opens like a door is really nice so you can easily access the room without having to do the step over thing all the time. Music or a radio or TV is also a good idea. I hope all goes well with you and your new baby. Would love to see pictures when it arrives. |

| I used an ex pen as well. I set it up the elongated way and had her bed at one end food and water in the middle and pee pad at the end near the gate part of the pen. It kept pixie out of trouble when I couldn't be there plus I knew she was safe

| I use a potty training puppy apartment for my Bentley. It has a divider with the small side for a bed and the larger side for the pee pad. When I first got him I would just have him in the apartment. It has a door on both ends and a big one across the front. When he got a little older I added a portable wire play yard to the side of it so he did have extra room to run around. Here is a so so video of him in it when the cat was teasing him while we ate dinner one night. You can get the idea of what the puppy apartment looks like, but the angle I shot is at the pen looks much smaller than it actually is.

| Why cartoons? Am I missing something? I never knew I was supposed to turn the telly to cartoons??? I've probably traumatized poor ZoE leaving it on regular network tv...who knows what she's seen on the daytime soaps

| I bought the richell pen in a medium but you could get the small. It has been a lifesaver for me. It has an expandable base, a floor thats easy to clean, a top and a separate pee room..I LOVE mine and it is really well built and sturdy. You can start small and expand it when she gets bigger. I am not comfortable leaving Jess to roam free when we are gone so she has plenty or room. Its now expanded to 5 feet long I got mine on wayfair.com |

| The suggestions you have been given are good ones. I would only warn that if you do choose to leave your pup in your bathroom, expect him to chew on any type of wood furniture like a vanity or stool. I only tell you this from personal experience. Oh yes, move the TP to higher ground too and the garbage can as well. LOL These little guys will get into everything and anything. Have fun!!

I did this once.....scratched wall paper from the wall, chewed baseboards, and that is in spite of having some really neat toys and food....I whole heartedly vote for an x-pen, a play pen, any kind of enclosed area where they are secure and safe and can not get into anythiong.....

I have used the bathroom with success. I did take up everything that could possibly be a hazard including the bath mat. She never chewed on my vanity but I was never gone more than 5 hours.

| Thank you so much for the advice... I really was looking forward to everybody recommending to use the bathroom as the puppy room lol, I know it sounds stupid but those crates and playpens just look like little jails to me and it breaks my heart leaving my puppy in there even for a couple of hours .... Maybe I can leave my puppy in the bathroom and see if he scratch the walls? Has anyone left a puppy in a room without damage to the walls? (I dont have any furniture in the bathroom) Where can I buy a big playpen? Petsmart? |
