YT 500 Club Member | First girl in a LONG time. Hi everyone. I've been on here a little bit but I am fairly new. My little girl Sophie is 5 months now and I am concerned about what to do when she goes through her first heat. The vet I use (and love) doesn't want to spay her until she is full grown because she is so small. Better safe than sorry. Anyway, all of my female dogs in the past (long past) all were spayed when they were about 6 months if I remember correctly and they didn't go through heat. What do I need to do? Any idea when this will probably take place? I just want to be prepared for her once it happens.

YT 2000 Club Member | Sophie is so adorable! Sometimes they don't have their first season until close to a year. I would just wait and pray that she doesn't come in heat. If she does, you will have to protect her with your life! Keep her away from any male! She is way too tiny to be bred! Is your male neutered? If not, I would have that taken care of, ASAP. Best of luck!

YT 500 Club Member | Oh yes, little Humpty Dumpty was fixed as soon as he was 6 mo. But, I will still keep them apart. I would never breed her, you're right, she is way to tiny. Should I buy panties for her is she goes into heat?

| Wow, she sure is tiny. I waited until my female was 8 months and 3.8 pounds to spay her. She did not go into heat before that, so I was lucky. I think panties will help with the mess, but do not let her leave your sight... She could lose her life if a male mated with her

| I have a friend that has a tiny Morkie, she found a vet in our area that would spay at 6mos ,but did it laproscopicly. The incision was 1/4" long and she was under for a very short time. This is just an option and you should do what you are comfortable with. The Morkie weighed 2 1/2lbs at spay. |

| We put diapers on our girls when they are in season. It can take almost 3 weeks to be completely stopped though. You can get doggie diapers or we just use regular baby diapers.

| My tiny 3 pound girl didn't even have a heat cycle till she was almost 19 months old, so your baby may not have a heat cycle till she's older too. I wouldn't have her spayed yet. My girl is now 1 year, 9 months, and I'm going to have her evaluated before having her spayed. I just want her to have as much weight as possible and to be very healthy. I home cook and she gets plenty of vitamins.

| I forgot to tell you that if you do go ahead and have her spayed at 2 or 3 pounds, then please, take her to a specialized Vet who has special equipment set up to handle the tiny ones.

| My curri bee was 17 months and 3.4 pounds when spayed. She never had a heat. Good luck and I applaud your decision to wait as long as you can keep her safe

I, too have been thinking about this. Princess Sophie weighed 3.7 at her 4 month check up and final rabies shot. I'm thinking by 6 months old, she should be big enough to be spayed. Am I thinking about this right??
