Default Weird Yorkie

My yorkie just turned a year 2 weeks ago yay! But he is so anti social, he doesn't like us and won't play with any family members or any human. He doesn't like other dogs. Crawls away if we call him or will simply ignore us. He would rather be outside than inside with us. He will sit by the door until we let him out. He won't take a treat from us. Have tried mostly every treat there is even honey roasted turkey. He will turn his head. We have to leave the treat on the ground and step away. Tried everything to make him like us but he just refuses to.

Did you get him as a puppy? He sounds like he is afraid of humans.....

That is so odd for a yorkie to be that antisocial. How long have you had him and has he always been this way/ What type of environment did he come from. Im just trying to understand why hes the way he is

I would get him checked out by the vet. Dogs can isolate and not want any interactions when they are ill or in pain or extremely fearful. You need to be certain that he's not ill or hurting before you do anything else. If your vet isn't that helpful or doesn't want to x-ray his back, etc., find another vet. Somebody needs to find out if he's in physical discomfort or quite ill first and foremost.

There are several reasons why a dog will act like this . It could be he has some physical problems. There is also the issue of socialization of the pups when they are first born. If a breeder does not handle the pups for the first several weeks of life or if the pups have very little human contact they many times are very uncomfortable with human touch. I have worked with younger dogs that have had this problem. It takes a lot of work in having them become trusting and acclimated with human scent and touch.

Having him closely checked out by a vet would be the first thing I would do. If you are able to get in contact with a certified animal behaviorist it could be very helpful to you and your little guy.

Got him as a pup the breeder brought him to our home with his mom, she was very social he seemed very shy. He is a healthy pup the vet has checked him and said he's one of his best because of how calm he is. He was the smallest of his litter. we are very cuddly with him but he doesn't warm up to us. I just thought he was very independent. He is a barker though outdoors only inside not a peep.

Have you checked out his vision and hearing? Those are two areas that can cause some communication problems that can lead to "different" behavior.

Did you visit the place where he was raised?

Has he always been like this, since his puppyhood or if not, when did it change?

Does he shake or tremble visibly, pant, lick his lips, yawn a lot around you? Does he do all or any of that?

Well I may have a weird yorkie too. Kholoe is a year old and barks at everyone in my family except me. Yours may be anti social but mine is a terrier terror.

Has he always been this way since he was a puppy? How many other dogs are in the household? Yorkies all have different personalities. It sounds like he just never bonded to any of you. If there are other dogs in the house then that could contribute to his being standoffish.

That is not the norm for our usually people-loving breed. I would think it is a sign of a problem -- if not physical, then emotional. Could it be your pup was separated from its momma too early? I've seen problems when they are taken prior to 12-16 weeks. If vet is sure there are no physical concerns, then you will just need to be extra patient. Try not to overwhelm a shy pup with too much "in your face" type attention. You will want to give lots of attention in theform of talk and gentle touch. But you might have to limit picking up, holding -- anything your pup might feel is a lossof control or confining until he's ready to be more relaxed. Some may just be more independent but chances are you will wind up with a loving, cuddly yorkie in time. I've never seen another breed that so obviously loves human contact. Good luck!

A friend of mine got a yorkie several years ago who was very odd as well. Even as a puppy he didn't interact well with people either. He's older now and her brother ended up taking him because he was able to take him out more but he's still odd, I think it's just his personality.
