| Help my yorkie eats everything off the ground Does anyone have a problem with their yorkie eating anything they find on the ground? When we go for walks in the neighborhood my yorkie puts her nose to the ground and is so fast and scoops up whatever is there. I try very hard to watch her but she is so fast. The other day she ate a flower petal that made her very sick. We really don't want to muzzle her when we go for walks. Has anyone had an issue with this?? Any suggestions. Thank you! |

| Mine did the same, it was really worrying! She's almost 15 months now and has 90% grown out of it

| Tibbe does the same thing. He loves to sniff when out walking and I let him "read his mail" all he wants on half of our walk but then the next thing you know, he's licking his lips as if he just swallowed something! I've threatened to stop his ability to sniff so much and even thought of muzzling him but so far he's not had really bad problems from it so I try to discourage the sniffing if I see anything it looks like he might scarf up. But it is a problem when you want to give your dog time to sniff and enjoy the scents left by other animals and people.

YT 2000 Club Member | Yup! When we first brought Teeka home, she would eat any thing she found on the ground! I was constantly having to follow her every where and stop her from eating any thing from poop to feathers! She is now 9 months and has outgrown this problem. At first it was a game because I would chase her to get what ever she had in her mouth. Someone on here, gave me advice to tell her "no, drop it" in a stern voice and distract or remove her from the source. It worked and she still has her nose to the grown, sniffing out everything but she doesn't try to eat it. It is normal and the terrier in them to do this! Good luck!

| Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions. We adopted this little girl and she is quick! We will continue to work with her but we are so worried she will get into something that will really make her sick. We appreciate any tips! |

| Tibbe does eat things that upset his tummy but I can't tell he's got anything in his mouth while he's grazing and sniffing until I see him licking after it's gone down! He'll drop things on command if you see him with something in his mouth but his deal is he's so slick at scooping up something down in the grass you can't see and scarfing it down, there is no way to know he's got something. So I try to avoid him doing this but it sure is hard.

| Your either going to have to teach leave it or use a muzzle. There is no shame in using a muzzle your doing it to protect her

| Like Deb, I've taught my boys to "drop it" or "leave it." The boys also know "that isn't good for you." Max was much worse when he was a puppy and I almost resorted to a muzzle. I still have to watch the boys very closely. The other day they found chicken wing bones, strawberries, a Slim Jim, and some candy on our walk.

| I have had to get lollipop sticks, candy wrappers, cigarette butts, and all kinds of paper away from Sam when he's been outside. There are a lot of kids in our neighborhood, so some of it is just inevitable, and he's getting pretty good about "leave it". But he is drawn to bird poop like a magnet. It's like someone dropped an ice cream cone in front of his nose. Just EEWWW and Ugh! So freaking nasty.

| Momo found a chicken wing bone by the park b4 too! I had to pry it out of his mouth & he knows the 'drop it' command but ignores it, he found a treasure! We don't walk by the park anymore, just the surrounding residential 'cleaner' areas. When Momo was 7 months old, he ate a queen palm fruit along w/the huge seed & had to have surgery to remove it. Since then, I watch him like a hawk when we're out. He'll pick up little rocks, leaves, paper, it seems like he does it more if I get upset. He'll pick anything up & drop it, widdle bugger, he likes playing w/me loll. They have the gentle leader in small sizes, but not small enough for him. Think those would work much better than a muzzle, he has a very short snout w/super long tongue & it would be hard for him to breathe w/it on. Muzzles are not designed to be left on for a long period of time, esp on walks... Link to Gentle Leader: Gentle Leader Product Description - Premier Pet

| If in their sniffing they gulp something down, there is no time for "leave it". All you see if the aftermath of them licking their chops! I don't know what it is he finds that is that small that I can't see it in the grass but the way he smacks his lips, I'm sure he's just found something in there and gulped it. The only recourse is to muzzle him and unless he gets really sick from this, I'm not willing to do that for Tibbe. But I have sure considered it once or twice.

| Sounds like we just really need to work with our Tilly. She loves to sniff and she is quick but we don't want to have to muzzle her. We have tried telling her "No" when she sniffs too long or if we see her trying to pick something off of the ground. Will try "leave it" too! We adopted her and she is 5 years old already so it may take awhile. We will bring home our new baby in another month (at 12 weeks) so we just want Tilly to be able to teach her well. Thank you for all of your suggestions! We love this site, so much real information! |

| Amy is like that also. I carry treats with me when she grabs something I don't think is good for her. She also likes to bring home something from the ground to show Daddy. Usually it is a leaf or twig right now but am afraid what summer will have for her to want to put into her mouth. It is scary. |

| Bentley does the same thing. When I first started taking him outside the first thing he noticed was cigarette buts. I wold quickly stop him and tell him leave it. Then I would say your too young to smoke. Kids found that funny. He seems to have "kicked the smoking habit" barely pays them any mind anymore. However he has moved on to EVERYTHING ELSE. lol. I've even started with a rubber toy when we are out playing. Works sometimes but other times the grass and leaves are just too darn inviting. That's that harder time for me, play time in the grass. Walking it's a bit easier to keep an eye on things. I'm sure my neighbors say there goes that "leave it" lady again. lol
