| first time dog owner with lots of questions Hey everyone, I found this website a few weeks back and have learned so much from reading all these threads. Unfortunately I do have a lot of questions that I need help with and I wanted to post them all in one post. Any or all questions that you can answer will be great. BTW a little background on me is that I'm a 21 year old student living in south florida and I will be getting a male yorkie in mid May. Im not 100% sure on his name yet (more like 98%) but I think I'm going to name him Joey with Thatcher as his middle name. Is that silly? Did anyone else give their Yorkie a middle name? Anyway here are the questions (they are kind of random): 1. What do you think of me having the puppy pee on a puppy pad in my balcony? -I live in an apartment (btw I will be getting netting for the balcony and he will always be on a leash) and instead of taking him out where other dogs pee I was wondering If I could put a pee pad in a pee pad holder on my balcony and walk him out there to pee and also have a pee pad inside. Would that confuse him? 2. If I cut off water after 7pm for example do I still need to take him out to pee in the middle of the night if he goes to bed lets say 2 or 3 hours after that. 3. If I wake him up at 6am at about what time should I put him down to sleep? How many hours does a 9-12 week puppy sleep? 4. What kid of brush should I buy him? Can you recommend any in particular or add an image so I get an idea. Honestly I had more questions but my mind went blank right now so I will add them later but is there any advice you guys have for me? I have never owned a dog before. Thanks again! |

| Oops almost forgot... Would this work for a puppy. These are from the internet but I was thinking of getting that play pen, a plastic crate like the one shown, and instead of using that grass looking thing putting a puppy pad in a plastic container like the one shown. If I leave the puppy in the playpen to sleep and leave the crate open is he likely to use the pee pad if I train him to. I don't mind him peeing on the floor in front of the crate because I could always clean it up but what do you guys think of this set up? I would mainly take him to the balcony to do his business and this would be only for night time or if he is home alone. |

I like the name Joey Thatcher! I think many of us gave our babies middle names. Mandie doesn't have one "technically" but I call her Mandie Jean. 1. I don't know if having a pee pad outside on the balcony and inside will confuse him, but I don't think it's necessary. How big is your balcony that you can use that for a walk? You will want to exercise him regularly (they have a lot of energy and if you don't burn it off, they can be a handful ). If you aren't going to do regular walks, just make sure you play fetch and stuff like that inside where he can run and get tired. 2. Why would you cut off water? He needs to have access to water if he is thirsty. Most won't get up and drink after they go to sleep anyway but if he needs to, he needs to. I wouldn't cut off his access to water and fact is - if you are going to get a puppy, you need to be in it 100%. That means, yes, losing sleep for a while at night because their little bladders can't hold it all night (whether you cut off water at a certain time or not, btw). No short cut around it...gonna have to let him get big enough where he can physically hold his urine. A puppy just can't do that. Otherwise, you are going to have a mess, my dear...a puppy laying in urine. ick lol 3. Puppies sleep a lot. They play full force while awake and then sleep a lot. You need to just set up a schedule for him that works for you. When you go to bed, put him to bed. But again...you are going to need to set that alarm and get up throughout the night to let him potty. 4. By far, the best brush and comb I have ever used on Mandie is a Madan Pin Brush and a Madan Mustache Comb. You can get both from mimimomo on her website toplinepet.com My only advice is keep reading and keep asking questions. You'll do great because you are preparing ahead of time!

| My opinion if you don't want to get up all night get a x-pen, or something similar where you can block off a small portion of your apartment for him. Make sure it is big enough to have crate/bed, pee-pad, and place for food and water. A used play pen works great if money is tight. This way he can stay in that overnight or while you are gone, and go potty when he needs to. When he gets older and shows he is sleeping through the night, then you can transition to how you want him to sleep, in your bed or crate. I did this with teddy and will do it with second one. |

| Oh I do plan to get up a few times in the middle of the night I just meant how will I train him to go in the pee pad inside his xpen instead of going outside (he would only use the indoor pee pads for middle of the night potty trips. |

| That's the million dollar question. lol At night, it's the hardest time to pee pad train unless you crate and get up every couple of hours. If you need to do the xpen thing, just reinforce a lot during the day when he uses his pee pad..praise praise praise and even a treat (I never treat for pottying but many do so it's your call). The only other option is to get one of those puppy apartments. This is actually a good idea. It has a divided section for sleeping and another section for pee pad. They, instinctively, don't want to pee and poo. I would skip the xpen and go with the puppy apartment. It is a little costlier but you have time to save and get it between now and next month

YT 2000 Club Member | Both my girls have middle names.......and as far as pee pad training at night....I get up with Tatiana and take her to the pad, say potty, she goes immediately and then we go back to bed. She always goes right back to sleep. I don't know, maybe this is not the norm but it is what happens here. Congratulations on your new addition!

Welcome! My yorkie Has a middle name so do a lot of people's dogs that I know. I think as long as you make sure the balcony is safe and he cant go through and fall it should be ok. If its the same pee pads outside and in I don't think it will confuse him. I don't think its a good idea to cut the water off until its bedtime I mean how would you feel if you where thirsty and couldn't have any water? Puppies are always going to have to get up in the middle of the night sometimes more then once. He will probably sleep the whole time you are gone so whatever time you go to bed should be a good time for him to go to bed. I noticed you said 9 to 12 week please don't bring him home until hes 12 weeks it will be much easier on you and it is so much better for the pup otherwise he could have a hard time being potty trained, biting issues, and socialization issues. Plus when there younger then 12 weeks you need to feed them every couple of hours. Also I have heard from people who got puppies before 12 weeks and then later on got one at 12 weeks and say there is a huge difference and the pups normally settle better. We are here to help ask all the questions you want. Make sure you have a harness for him and do not ever hook the leash to his collar because toy breeds are very susceptible to collapsing trachea. Collars are only good for tags.

| My little lyra is coming home in 8-10 weeks. I am still playing with a few middle names. But she will definitely have a middle name, i think most people here have full names for their little ones. 1. I do not think it will confuse him, I know multiple that have their dogs pee pad/grass trained, most likely the puppy will just identify with the pee pad and go when he sees it once trained. 2. I would not cut off water, the puppy will still have to go even if you with-hold it. 3. Puppies will decide when they need to sleep. BUT if you dont want him up to play multiple times a night, in my experience i would keep him up 2 hours before bedtime without letting him get too much nap time to wear him out. 4. Not positive about a brush, ive been looking on here for that too. Thanks for the idea Mandiesmom. |

That's a cute name!! Middle names aren't silly If I could've thought of a cute one Lily would have one too. 1. Pee pads on the balcony don't confuse them. Lily and Taka both go on the balcony, I bought a big grass patch and they both use it just fine and when I take them outside they don't have a problem going either. I just say go potty and they both go. 2. Taka is almost done being crate trained at the moment (he was 4 months when we got him, hes now 6 months). When we first got him we would put him in the cage around 10pm (after taking him out) and he would start whinning to go out around 5:30-6am. So he pretty much held it all night if you put him in a little area he wont pee because he doesn't like rolling it. 3. I wake up at 6am every morning and Taka goes to sleep at 10pm. He doesn't like it at first but he calms down and goes to sleep right away and doesnt wake up until the morning But, DEFINITELY DO NOT let him take a nap before you are ready for bed lol. Taka is really really hyper after a nap and wants to play and growl at all of his toys and runs through the house on hyper speed. you don't want that right before you wanna sleep. 4. I just use a simple dog brush with the brush on one side and the bristles on the other. And I use a comb after they are brushed out to get the little mats out. I hope this helps you a little | |

| My two have their litter name as their middle name(Ziva Grace and Abby Jane)- J.Thatcher is really cute! When my two were little they just fell asleep right where they were- Abby still"passes out" at 8:00pm no matter how we try to keep her up. I have the ISIS expen you pictured Except the 8 panel 36" high one- some yorkies can be amazing climbers - the 24" high would not keep Abby in for a minute! It is a great investment, I know when they are left alone they are safe and have plenty of room. |

| I have a Joey and he doesnt have a middle name. But he has a TON of nicknames I lived in an apt when I first got him and tried to do the whole pad thing, it didnt work out. He is now a yr old and will hold it just so he can pee/poo outside. I was scared at first because hes so tiny and I didnt want to get his hair messy all the time, but I keep it short and he doesnt seem to let his size bother him. He does have an XPEN for when we are gone (both him and my lab have crates) but usually sleeps with me in the bed. When he was a puppy he learned that if he needs to go potty, he is to get off the bed and go somewhere other than where I sleep LOL. Both of my dogs have a pretty regular schedule, Joey has food all the time because I never want him to get hypoglycemic, but Carley (the lab) gets fed twice a day. They go out at regular intervals throughout the day, but both can hold it if we are gone for the day. Theyre adaptable animals and will do whatever you want them to do, just train them how you want them to be
