| Small dogs do not need spayed?! Hello everyone! Went along with my friend to the vet's office today for a check up on her 6 month old yorkie-pom. When she asked about a spaying appointment, her Vet replied "She is only 3 pounds and not going to get much bigger, she doesnt' need spayed." I was incredulous to this statement. When I asked him why she didn't need it her replied "Well what's going to be able to breed her?" Idk maybe another small yorkie? Anyway, I am VERY surprised and nervous that this vet would say that, I do not think he's a bad vet but most likely just inexperienced with small dogs. Am I the misinformed one here? I have always heard to do spays on even small dogs. I am sure a 3-4 pounder could get pregnant. Maybe i'm wrong. I told my friend to get a second opinion, but she said she agrees with the vet, after all he went to school. So I would just like all of your opinions, she has other small breed unaltered boys in the house and i would HATE for her to have an unexpected pregnancy. |

| Are you absolutely sure the vet didn't mean to wait and see if the yorkie-pom gains some more weight before spaying? A lot of vets don't like operating/spaying when they are so small. The dog definitely needs to be spayed. ESPECIALLY because it is such a small dog. So, if you are absolutely sure the Vet meant it didn't need to ever be spayed, please have your friend find another vet. That's beyond ridiculous.

| Her small size is even more reason to spay. Imagine how difficult and dangerous pregnancy and delivery would be, especially if impregnated by a larger male. I would not trust that vet to do anything!

| I thought that is what the vet meant originally. She was requesting an appointment at around a year old for spaying. When I clarified and he asked what was going to breed her that is what led me to believe he did not want to do it at all. When checking out and making other appointments the secretary even told us the name of another vet when we told her he didn't want to schedule one, she said it was a common thing with him and a lot of people have changed vets because of it. So i am almost absolutely sure that he meant it as a general statement. |

| Wow! I would ask why the receptionist continues to work for a Vet who even she doesn't have faith in, but then I remember how terrible the economy is and we all need our jobs. lol Yeah, that's nuts. Please have your friend find another Vet asap.

| This small dog needs to be in the hands of a vet who is very experienced and competent with SMALL dogs, for the spay, and for any other general issues that may come up. He admittedly is showing you he is not. Also forgot to mention that spaying offers protection against cancer in all female dogs, big or small.

| I am going to show her the replies I get here to try to convince her. Trying to convince her to go to my vet instead. I was just so surprised at this I figured i would ask the more experienced, in case I had my information wrong. |

OMG!!! Here is our next "accidental breeding" and an owner that has no idea what is going on, a vet that gives what I would consider uninformed advise, and a tiny little girl that probably can not survive carrying/having a litter. YOU are absolutely correct....she needs to be spayed, especially with unaltered males around her. I am just praying you misunderstood what that vet said....but I wouldnt let THAT vet spay her...he obviously is not experienced with small dogs and I wouldnt want a tiny dog being spayed by a vet that does not have a clear understanding of small dogs...surviving the surgery is only the beginning...there are post op complications that sma;ll dogs have ....a vet that is experienced in small dogs, averts these complications so they are not even an issue. You keep trying to talk some sense into her.....or have all the males neutered! | |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | GAsp the week for idiotic vet statements! No have that female spayed. Right now. Or better yet, take the hopefully older males in to get neutered. She is likely going to come in soon to a first heat. She must be protected at what-ever cost from breeding. Take that female to your vet, who presumably knows how to handle, care and neuter/spay toy breeds. Believe you me, any size dog can mate together, all it takes is a bit of ingenuity and some acceptance on the females part.

YT 2000 Club Member | Wow, I have never heard of a vet that doesn't recommend a spay! I have 3 small yorkies and they are either fixed or going to be. Seriously, this vet needs his head examined !

| Thank you all for your posts! Considering your responses, and my constant battering she is going to schedule with my vet for a second opinion/spay. We suggested neutering the 3 boys but they are her brothers and apparently a neuter to him makes them less manlyish. My vet's practice is a father and son and both are very experienced with small dogs, they did spays on both of my Malteses. Thank you all, I love love love YorkieTalk. |
