| wish us luck lol (i'm going to need it!) i posted a long time ago about our (then) new Biewer yorkie...his name is Hunter. the breeder i got him from claims he was housebroken but so not the case....well Hunter is now 2 and i will be perfectly honest life got in the way and i just took the easy (lazy?) way out and stuck a belly band on him and moved on with life but now i'm seeing the error of my way and i really want to teach him to go outside...is it too late? for the last 2 days i've been treating him like a puppy...he's officially on housebreaking bootcamp LOL taking him out every couple hours....keeping him either tethered to me or in the crate....no free feeding, only twice a day.....NO more chances to go in the house or in his belly band!!! is it possible to teach a 2 year old yorkie to go outside? any idea how long this might take? I've heard stories on opposite ends of the spectrum with one side saying it will take longer because he's got a habit of going inside and then the other side saying it wont take as long because he's older and will pick up on it quicker any ideas? trips? encouragement? LOL either way ...i'm ready to deal with this head on with a clean slate!! |

| Do what you are doing. Start from scratch, crate and tether. It is very possible to potty train at 2 years old. Just have patience and keep at it

| i believe you can retrain him...lots of positive praise when he goes outside. i myself am not a believer in treats for potty at anytime. i am big on vocal praise. doing what you have listed sounds good. just always being aware and making the correction when caught in the act of accidentally pottying inside without making him feel like ur upset with him...just picking him up saying no no and bringing him outside in an even tone. thats my two cents. wishing you much luck..be consistent and he will eventualy understand what you are trying to teach him.

| Absolutely you can! It sounds like you are off to a great start. Although I did not have Jack in a belly band, we had trained him to go on the "paper" (pee pad) but we successfully trained him to go outside well after he was 2 years old. Keep consistent and when he goes outside give him lots of praise and treats even! Another thing - I always give a command - I usually say, go potty or go pee pee. And I still give praise to him (or our newest addition Izzy) when he comes in. Good luck to you.

| Most certainly you can train him! I volunteer at a shelter and we have dogs at 7 and 8, who have never been house broken that are properly taught in just a few weeks with consistent training. |

| thanks i'm going to keep up with it!!! im trying to figure out why he went potty in his crate earlier while i was gone =\ i took him out around 9...fed him around 9:15 and 9:45 took him out out for a potty...was gone from about 9:50-2:30 and i came back and he did a pee in his crate..argh!! he should have been able to hold it longer than that right? i mean he has before... I hope he doesn't have a UTI i dont have the money to take him to the vet because me and both my kids were sick with stomach virus and i'm broke until payday from copays at the doctor....i'm gonna call and ask them to call me in a script just in case he has one |

| Good luck at the vets he most likely doesnt have a uti its just good to rule it out. Keep him tethered to you and when you take him out ring that bell everytime. They can learn with repetition. I had a cat yrs ago that would ring a bell we had in our bedroom to let us know it was time for us to get up and feed her. It was comical at times but she did it every day

| we are back from the vet..the vet said he showed a little protein and some white blood cells in his urine which showed a minor UTI but we caught it just in time...he's on 10 days of medication to clear it up!!! and the good thing was i was able to get the pills there and put it on my carecredit card ...so it didnt cost me anything today...whew lol i feel terrible though she told me the purina we have had Hunter on for the last year (i used that because that's what the "breeder" used)....is like eating McDonalds every single day......so i've thrown it out except what i need to use to make a gradual change....and went straight to the feed store here and bought Blue Wilderness Duck (i bought this brand because she gave him this brand of biscuit treats so i know he likes it) i feel awful :'( |
