| help Top knot and scratching. Hi there. . . My yorkie is one years old and a few months ago I cut her top knot of. I decided to cut it of because she always scratch herself and her top knot. But now she look like a boy and she look funny to me. And why does she scratch her so. Can it be her shampoo and conditioner or some allergies or do you guys think that I should buy hypoallergenic shampoo? And how long will it take for her top knot to grow back. "She has a cotton coat". Thanks . . . |

If she is still scratching without the top knot, it might be allergies or that her shampoo and conditioner aren't completely rinsed out. Does she scratch in other places other than her head?

| If she is only scratching at the topknot then I wouldnt worry...some dogs even when they are loose just dont seem to like them and want them out.

| Do you think it could be her ears that she is actually scratching? She could have ear mites or some other ear problem. Constant scratching is not normal. Can you have her checked out by the vet? Is there a rash on her skin or flakes? Using an all natural shampoo and conditioner will help keep the skin from getting stripped by the sulfates that are in most regular shampoos. Make sure you are giving her a high quality food. If your food does not have an Omega3 supplement in it then you might want to try a supplement. How long it takes for the topknot to grow is going to depend on how short you cut it. It does seem to take forever when they are puppies through. |

| Thanks for all the replies. I do not think it could be her food she was on Royal canine and are now on hills. She do not scratch her ears I clean it once a week. I have try so many different shampoos and conditioners I do not know what to buy but I am going to order this Tropiclean Oxy Med Medicated Treatment Rinse and Tropiclean Medicated Oatmeal & Tea Tree Shampoo. Have anyone of you tried this before and if how did it work? I currently use a tea tree shampoo and pantene smooth and sleek for conditioner it works best for her coat (cotton coat). Can it be the pantene conditioner that can cause this problem? Thanks. . . |

| What kind of bands do you use? If it's latex, could she have a latex allergy? Is the tee tree oil shampoo for people or dogs? Human shampoos are too harsh for a dog's pH but human conditioners are are fine to use.

| Tea tree oil is toxic to dogs. There is probably only a small amount in the conditioner you are using, but it would probably be best to use something else. Here's info on it: Tea Tree Oil and Dogs, Tea Tree Oil and Cats

| Hi, I would agree w/the above statements. U really might want to figure out when, where and how much she is scratching. If the skin doesn't look irritated, I wouldn't go to a medicated shampoo tho. Rinsing well after a shampoo or conditioner is SO important. Soap residue will dry the skin and can lead to excessive scratching that can cause problems. You mentioned you clean the ears weekly. If they are dirty every week, then you may have a problem. Healthy ears, IMO, should not be dirty every week. Even though u are feeding name brand foods, it doesn't mean they can't cause a problem for your dog. Although, if she is just scratching in that area, it's probably not the food. I like a quality oatmeal shampoo n conditioner. I currently use Pure Paws. Being a good detective will help you zero in on the problem. Once you know what you're dealing with, you can go from there. Good Luck. |
