| Constant Whining! My yorkie is 5 yrs old now & constantly cries/whines! If I'm standing up & she cant reach me, she whines. She whines if I'm talking to my husband & not paying attention to her. If I'm laying on the couch watching tv, she'll stand in front of me & just whine! I Love her so much so I'm guilty of spoiling her....but sometimes, its very frustrating! Does anyone else have this problem? Any clue as to why she would be doing this? I dont think she is in pain, or that anything is really wrong for that matter. Maybe a bit too spoiled. Any ideas of how I can get her to stop would be greatly appreciated!

| No advice here. She just wants some attention and loving and is a Yorkie - they must be the center of the universe, didn't you know that?

| Haha so true! I guess I should have known that, I'm just so spoiled with how well behaved & independent my other yorkie is!

| Has she been doing this all along, or is it a new behavior? If it's new, I'd have a vet check her over... maybe she's not feeling well and being clingy.

| if cedric is whinning for something that he wants or cause keylo took the bully stick he wants but theres another right in front of him. i ignore it. its the only way to curve the super needy behavior. hell stop once he realizes i am not giving in to his whimes. now if there is a medical issue thats a different story. i hope all turns out ok..but i suggest a bit of letting her whine and not giving into everything she is demanding.

| a trainer told me that when they are doing behavior you dont like just turn you back on them and ignore them. When they stop the behavior praise and treat...eventually she will make the connection that whinning gets her diddly squat! |

| Rewards I'd bet you give in to the whining (which makes the behavior stronger). Reward him with attention when he is NOT whining. If you are consistent, the behavior will become extinguished. This is called an extinction course. Note that when getting rid of a behavior, the behavior may increase for a short period of time. This is normal but lasts only briefly. Don't be surprised or become discouraged. Unfortunately, this is when most people give up as they think its not working. Persevere and the behavior will suddenly just stop. The dog will use the new behavior you reinfirced (waiting quietly in front of you), but will try the old behavior occasionally just to see if it will work. Stay consistent if you really want it to change. This works with ALL non-neuro behaviors - most behaviors!!!! |

| Mine do it too. Actually my Fletcher barks when we are not paying attention to him. When applicable, like when hubby & I are having a conversation in the kitchen, I put him in the living room and gate him in there. Then he can't get to me. He will sit on the back of the chair and stare at us, but he's quiet. It has worked and helped a lot. You have to be consistent though. If I am sitting down, they are usually welcome on or near me. But if I had to, I would get up and put them in another room for 5 mins at a time and just do it repeatedly until they get the point. They are lucky to be with me, but if they go overboard they lose the privilege (in their eyes) for 5 mins and I'll do it every 30 seconds if I have to.

If this is habitual whining, you can stop it but will have to work a good bit to change things but first, we all need some info. How long have you had her and is she neutered? How long is she alone during the day? What is her day like from morning until you put her to bed? This is critical to knowing what might be going on. Just break down her day for me and I think we can help you. There are many of us here who have had a dog like this from time to time, whether in rescue or as a pet. Some whine less than constantly but it can get constant if not nipped in the bud. Even when it is full blown constant, you can still stop it but it will take work on your part. And persistent consistency. Boy, will you need to be persistent.

| Finnigan does this during the winter months when we can't get outside and get him the right amount of exercise/activity. When we're gone at work during the day and only have short walks, I think the pups get bored. So we try to do little games to get him active at night. He loves to be chased and Gwenni loves fetch so we'll tire them out a bit/provide them some exercise and it really helps! Maybe try something like that.
