| Bear Scare in Central NY Last night Gracie woke up suddenly and started to growl and bark. There is a window right next to the foot of my bed and Gracie was sniffing and getting really upset. I got my flashlight out and there was a huge bear staring at me! His face was 6" from the glass of the window! Now that is enough to get your adrenaline rushing! He was huge! I have a bird feeder that sits on a metal pole about 2' from my window. This monster has been flattening the pole to the ground off and on for about a month. Every time it happened Gracie would growl and bark. I would turn on the backyard light but see nothing. Sometimes we will see deer when Gracie barks because they like bird seed as well. This time I got quite a shock. I'm accustomed to the wildlife around here but from a distance! After getting my brain functions back I got mad because that bird seed is getting expensive and my metal pole is almost all the way broken through so I have to replace it. I got my flashlight and started banging on the window to try to get him to go away. He did move away from the window but he ate every bit of my bird seed and flattened what was left of the pole again. I guess the birds are going to have to hope for an early spring! | There is only a 1/4 of glass and a screen between you and 500 lbs. of bear?!?!?!?! You are far braver than I am!!!! I would be grabbing guns, calling 911 and Animal Control and Century 21 and getting out of there for good. The scariest thing I've ever seen out of my window was a lizard on the screen wire and that was bad enough. A bear?!?! No, thank you. What if he'd wanted to come in your house - right through that window? Could you do anything to prevent it? You are far calmer about this than I would be. You should see my thread about Eeeeeeekkkk!!!! Lizzie the Lizard, a tiny little pale lizard that I saw in my house. I was in a blind panic and here you faced down a BEAR and are soooo cool. I bow to you in awe. You have all the cool in the world. And please, please, stay safe. Yikes. I probably would have dropped down dead standing there looking at a bear just on the other side of my bedroom window.

| I got rid of my bird feeders to keep hawks from getting the doves gathering. Believe me, I would not have bird feeders if there is a bear wanting food! Glad you and everyone is safe.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | As soon as the bears start to wake the feeders go away. There is not much out there for them to eat. Oh no I better keep my eyes out. We have bee hives!

It does make me uncomfortable to think he has been that close to my home. I have a stone bear at my front door that the real bear apparently ate the straw hat off of. My daughter sometimes works nights and comes home in the dark so that is a concern. I called the game warden this morning and she was much less concerned than I was. "Just don't put the bird feeder out." she says! Apparently the bear population has increased quite a bit in this region. 'Well, thanks for letting all us sitting ducks know about it' I thought as I was listening to her! I know this one has been around for at least a month because that is how long I have been having problems. This does present a complication concerning our activities for sure! I hope he moves on soon. | |

| You are so right about bears more interested in food then anything else. We have a phenomenal black bear researcher here in Minnesota out of Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center. Have any of you heard of Lily and Hope? A webcam was put in Lily's den and people all over the world got to watch Hope being born. I've learned so much fact and fiction by following the webcams and daily updates. Last summer I was lucky to be picked to actually "walk" with the wild bears with 7 other joe schmoes. For three days we hiked/bushwalked in the woods with the two researches meeting wild bears...literally within feet of them (but no touching), learning how they live and the many misconceptions about them! Someday when I get time to get pics smaller I will post some..the babies were absolutely adorable. Ill look back in my notes...they had given some suggestions about keeping them out of your birdfeeeders...if I find them ill post too!

| Oh just a hint for your daughter...have her carry pepperspray...most bears will be more scared of you then you are of them but that's what the people in the research area carry with them in case a bear gets too curious!

YT 1000 Club Member | SO WOULD I ! Bless those big guys, I hate to "mistreat" them, but the can be SO dangerous, and one quick swipe from one of them, could put you in misery for a very long time, if not worse. Many of us have Shotguns. They make a large variety of ammo, which includes Blank Shells (no bullet, just a loud bang) and Rock Salt loaded Shells as well, which a Bear could recover from quickly. Those guys are so quick and mobile, I really doubt the viability of calling 911 or Animal Control. They just wouldn't be able to react quickly enough. One really needs to take action RIGHT THEN !

| Oh my, OP is so sanguine about this, you can tell what a citified girl I am. But still, I swear if I ever saw a bear - an actual bear - looking at me through any window anywhere anytime I'd probably faint dead away. And I sure would get rid of the birdseed!

| Oh no!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot believe that! That is a BEAR!!!!! A close bear! A too-close bear! I couldn't get that close to something that big and hairy and with that many large teeth to save my life. Even if it were a trained bear - I'd be thinking of that lady with the friend's chimp that attacked her and things like that and all you could see of me in that picture would be far, far away and of my back side and running! haha. Whoever is posing and taking those pix is far braver than I will ever be, even if that bear had some leg-iron on and it was stretched to the max! I am the #1 Blue-Ribbon-Winning World's Official Chickenist Chicken when it comes to wild things and creepy-crawlies!

| Bears OH MY ! Bears are another thing Yorkie owners need to worry about. One swipe of a bear's paw can cause a huge amount of damage and even death. A barking dog may be seen a threat. I am not sure what advice would be appropriate. I would worry about just wounding a bear, that might make them extremely aggressive. I know how to shoot and could probably kill one if I had to. But is stealing bird food and destroying property a valid reason to shoot one ? On the other hand the bear is a danger to your dog and maybe people too, what to do ? I guess I would call the news, police, etc. and keep calling, until someone removed it from the area. I am so glad this was not an outside confrontation and that you and Gracie are ok.

| Some info on Black Bears Some info on Black Bears: Some people have the mistaken idea that when a bear charges, it's time to shoot. Dr. Lynn Rogers has studied black bears for many years. He says black bear charges are pure bluff. "Hold your ground, or better yet, make noise and wave your arms, and the bear will go back to its business. But NEVER challenge a bear that's cornered," says Dr. Rogers. "Although black bears very seldom attack people, they are still feared and hated by some people. Black bears are protected by laws, but are hunted for sport in some states. (You need a hunting license for them - much like hunting deer.) Other bears are poached, often to supply parts to the Asian folk medicine trade. But the greatest threat to black bears is habitat loss as people continue to multiply and invade its territory. (And this is why you have a bear in your yard eating your birdseed.) Probably the most famous black bear lived in Louisiana. It was a black bear cub that big game hunter Theodore Roosevelt (a U.S. President) refused to shoot. It inspired the stuffed toys known today as "teddy bears." Another famous black bear was rescued from a forest fire in New Mexico. It became known as Smokey Bear. New Mexico chose the black bear as its state animal. The black bear also represents West Virginia, and Ontario's coat of arms has a black bear in the design." And Bobbi, those pictures are absolutely beautiful! Gorgeous creatures!

| That first picture looks just like the guy that was looking in my window last night! We are used to the regular forest animals but to see something that big that close is just freaky. You are a lot braver than me to get that close to a bear that size! I'm surprised they let people get that close. Around here they don't want the bears getting used to being around people. They say they start demanding food and harassing people. The game warden assures me this guy will move on as long as all food sources are cut off. I'm sure he has not been surviving on my bird seed as I cut down how much I put out after the first time my pole got flattened. I am concerned about my daughter. Do you know where she can get pepper spray? She does have to walk a few yards in the dark before she gets to the door. I'm leaving the light on for her but this guy does not seem to be concerned about lights being on. The game warden also said they do not want people feeding the bears as that can create all kinds of problems. NO problem! I have no desire to feed the bear! She told me the birds did not need bird feed any more because it is spring but I really did enjoy watching the birds as most people do in this area. Guess the birds are on their own! |
