| Outdoors in the Winter? Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and new to having a Yorkie friend, so please excuse me if this is a stupid question. For background, I got my puppy last friday from a vet tech who had bought herself two puppies for her birthday. It seems she already had 1 dog, and after a few weeks her and her husband decided 3 dogs were too many and started looking for a new home for the smallest pup. After much thinking and back and forth, I took her home Friday. Her name is Bug and she is approximately 1.5-2.0 pounds and 4 months old. Everything is going swimmingly, but I have question about walks/fresh air. I took her out Friday evening - in a harness, with a sweater on - and she was still so very, very cold. It was sad. Within a minute she was practically climbing up my leg, shivering and crying. I couldn't stand it, she seemed so frozen, even with the sweater and tiny boots on. What do you all do to ensure your yorkie gets fresh air without freezing? Do you keep them in during the winter? I don't mind waiting for warmer weather, but I don't want to deprive her either. The clothes I got don't seem to help, although I am in Ottawa, Ontario so it can get quite cold here. Is there a yorkie parka somewhere, lol? Any advice would be appreciated! |

YT 2000 Club Member | Ours love to go outside but not when it is extremely cold. Teeka is 3 lbs and she gets cold easier. She doesn't have as much body fat to keep her warm. I put a sweater on her and a "parka" w/ hood when it is really cold. Yorkies can't take a lot of cold because they don't have an undercoat, so keep the walks short in extreme cold!

| Blazer loves the snow (granted, he's bigger than Bug at 6 pounds and 9 months.) Two weekends ago we took him with us ice fishing and he was great wearing his padded harness, a sweater, and his parka. No boots, we've never bothered trying them on him. He was toasty warm and fought me every time I tried to put him in the truck or fish house to warm up- he just wanted to run and play!
