| What to do with a new puppy? We will be welcoming a new puppy this week.. Addie and I'm not sure of how to handle it. Avery has pretty much free reign of the apartment while I'm at work, but I'm scared he will bark or the puppy will whine all day from being in a kennel. I know the pup needs to be in a kennel, but how to I handle Avery not barking and/or whining?

| I posted a whole reply and it's gone. Make sure she is at least 10 weeks before you bring her home. If she is home with another dog alone I'd crate the pup. It's better to have someone home for at least the first week to bond and at least get the pup started on a routine. |

| If you are going to be gone all day at work, I would highly recommend an xpen instead of a crate to keep her in. You could actually hook both together (see a thread very close to this one about Crates hooked to Xpens). Addie will be too young (even if she's the recommended 12 weeks) to hold her pee and poo all day. You don't want her "going" in her crate. In an xpen, you can have her food, water, toys, pee pads and a bed..or again, hook the xpen to a crate and have her bed in that. That pic of Addie is adorable!! I felt worried when I brought Mandie home, too. Shelby had free reign of the house and I thought the 2 would play off of each other and make Mandie feel worse. It didn't. She whined at first when being put up (she had her own bedroom lol). However, that quickly subsided. Really, when we humans leave..the pups mostly sleep all day

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Aww such a cute chocolate. I wound of recommend an ex pen. It works wonders. I have a crate too that I leave open. I have the iris 4 panel pen with 2 extra panels so I have 2 doors. When I bring him out I leave the doors open so if he has to go potty he can go in there by himself.

| If you crate a young puppy while you are at work you are going to come home to a very soiled puppy and crate. An X pen will supply your puppy with a place for a potty pad in a frame, food and water, with a separate area for a bed. A young small breed puppy is always at risk for hypoglycemia so it needs food while you are gone. Crate training only works if you are there to take the puppy out every time it has to go. That would be very frequently for even a 12 week old puppy. Your puppy is adorable. |
