| Tips for clipping nails, please! I cannot for the life of me, figure out how to clip my yorkie's nails. 3 lbs Pippa is 11 months and 2lbs Hollywood is 6 months old. With me previous yorkie, who passed away last year, I never had an issue with it. However, with these two it is amazing how squirmy/wiggly and strong they are in resisting my attempts. How do the rest of you do it? I figured with puppies they would be easier to train to sit still but neither one of them is cooperating. Our last attempt had my husband and I both "wrestling" with our 3lbs Pippa who ended up winning! Any tips would be greatly appreciated...thanks! |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Its always easir the earlier you start. Plus I've found that if you wrap them up in a bath towel like a burrito with the paws exposed and laying on their back in your lap helps. That way they cant streggle as much, you may need someone to help you with it. Sounds silly but sometimes necessary so that they done get hurt. Same thing with trimming the ear hair. Ya gotta do what ya gotto do ! And dont forget the calm, soothing voice and the treats for reward after each paw. You could always try when they are sleeping too. What they dont know wont hurt them.

| Firstly, your avatar is adorable. I'd see keep at it. Tufty would not sit for me at all. Then when he realized he got rewards for being good it's not a problem. Teegy never gave me much of a fight. Clip on nail a day until they become familiar then you aren't really fighting too much |

YT 2000 Club Member | Dawn has great suggestions! I have the same problem and the last time, Teeka jerked at the wrong time and I clipped it too short! It bled so much and now I am scared to try to do it again. I also do a couple at a time. That seems to help since she seems to think that I am torturing her! Good Luck!

| I refuse to do Mandie's. I have a hard enough time with regular nails..but black ones? Uh..no! I actually just priced a nail clipping at PetSmart to compare but I get Mandie's done at the vet.

| I cut Blazer's after his bath so that they are nice and soft and the quick is easier to see. I wrap him in his towel and have him on his back in my lap and take his paws out one at a time to clip them. If he tries to squirm I sternly tell him NO! and keep working. The more assured and confident I am with the clipping the easier it goes. When we are all done I tell him that he is a good boy and give him lots of affection and sometimes a treat.

| I have managed to clip Princess Sophie's back feet when she is very sleepy however I am really struggling with her front feet. Seems if I try to clip the front ones when she's sleepy, she gets so riled up, that soon she's wide awake and the real struggle begins. She pulls her feet back and bites my hands. We're still working on this. LOL I really like the idea of swaddling with feet exposed and the idea about doing one a day. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks so much!

| I would not attempt to clip Gracie's nails by myself. She is a wiggler. Wrapping in a big bath or beach towel really helps. You may have to reposition the towel with each leg but it keeps their heads out of the way. If you have a extremely difficult time you might want to try a dermal made for pets. It sands down the nail instead of clipping. There is less of a chance of accidentally clipping the vein and it makes a nice rounded nail that won't scratch your skin. I once had a dog that was so bad about nail clipping that even 4 of us could not safely hold him down. When I took him to the groomer to have the nails clipped he stood there like and angel. |

| *knock wood* So far I have been lucky with Sam. He's absolutely aces about getting his nails clipped. Even the vet tech who trimmed them on our last visit said he will be a groomer's dream because he's so calm.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I wish I could do it with Brandi my 6 yr old who had her paw bit about a year ago by none other than Ruby and now refuses to let me trim her nails. SHe cant stand to have her paws touched now now. We are working with her to get her use to the idea all over again. I wonder if I would have any luck wrapping a 18 lb Tea Pot Yorkie up like a burrito..Not likely ....

| My only thought is to have the vet do it. Amy is called squirmey wormy and there is no way I would try to clip her nails. She would probably be one paw short when it was all over. Scared to death to try. |

| I tried everything under the sun to clip my boys' nails myself......it's amazing how incredibly strong a 6.5 lb dog can be when they want to! I bring them to the groomer and she works her magic. |

| Thanks everyone, I will definitely try the "burrito" method! They don't like being wet so maybe being traumatized from the bath will distract from the nails...wish me luck |
