Omg Roxy is only 7 weeks!!!!

I just found out that our newest yorkie cousin is only 7 weeks old! She has had no shots and I don't know how much she weights. I am so scared and worried!!!! She is taking her to the vet today. I told her about hypoglycemia and offered her some of my Nutra Cal. I am so scared for the puppy as she is in a first time dog owner! She has no clue about yorkies! I want to go get her and keep her safe until she is at least 12 weeks, but I know that is not going to happen!

Are you physically near her...ie, same city? If so, print her off some simple yet thorough instructions to help her care for this young baby; also print signs and symptoms that mean emergency. If she is far away, maybe email it to her...? How scary .

Yes, she is only 20 minutes away! I just talked to her about hypoglycemia, the signs and what to do. She is taking her to the vet this afternoon to get her first shots and a check up. I questioned her on what food she is feeding and how often. She says she is eating often but not drinking much.

I agree, we picked up our Princess Sophie at 8 weeks and I knew it was not the best thing to do. I already knew about hypoglycemia from learning about it through YT and we still had an episode on the way home from the breeder. I was terrified but knew we needed to get her to a better place.

Sending prayers that this little pup gets good care and grows big and strong!!

She is to young for her first shots and when she is old enough she should only get one at a time. Where did she get this puppy?

She said the breeder "wanted them gone!" There are breeders that should not be doing this if they don't care about yorkies! She came from a home and not a puppy mill, so you would think that they would be more concerned about the well being of the puppies! Probably just doing it for the money!

Default New to Yorkie Talk also --- Hi everyone !

I love all the information on this site.. bless you all.. I just purchased 2 female Yorkies from a non-breeder.. he said his female had gotten pregnant accidently... he had a scheduled appt. to have the female spayed when she went into season early.. he placed a diaper on her and of course this wasn't effective since the male yorkie lives in the house too... I saw a sign outside his front lawn.. and decided to take a look... I fell in love instantly ... he's bringing me the little babies on Sat. they are only 8 wks old.. which concerns me a great deal... I truly feel this man feels overwhelmed.. I already purchase non-skid water bowl along with bowls.. chew toys for teething... along with a crate... I haven't had puppies in almost 10 years... any suggestion will be grateful. I have 2 other dogs that belong to my daughter who moved back in with me.. I thank you all very much.

You should probably repost this in its own thread. Sounds like you're going to have your hands full with wee ones. You'll probably get a lot more response if you start a new thread.

Good luck!

When the puppies start eating solid food the mom stops cleaning up after the puppies. Breeders like this do not want to put all that time and effort into cleaning up after a littler of puppies. They may also be looking forward to the money they get for the pups. This is why many people are so against backyard breeders. Thankfully your cousin can come to you for advise but other first time small puppy owners will not have a clue about what they are dealing with. It 's very sad. Many Yorkie pups have a difficult time adjusting to a new home. To think of one having to deal with that stress at 6 weeks of age is heartbreaking.

Young puppy care is scary. The more information the better. I am glad you are there for her. I wrote about very Young Puppies, I will try to find it. It had some good tips.

The PREMIE

ADOPTING A PUPPY UNDER 12 Weeks old

Congratulations on your new Puppy. A Yorkie puppy should stay with his mother until he is about 12 weeks old. If Your puppy is younger, you have a premature puppy in a way. You will have to be his mommy and teach him like she would.
1. Umbilical Tethering
Is a wonderful way to bond with your puppy and keep him safe. Hook a leash to his harness and put the other end on your wrist. He will feel secure, he can see you, smell you, and hear your heart beat and breathing. When he is not hooked to you he should be safe in his crate or play pen. You should resist the urge to carry your puppy around. This is a human instinct for human babies. Doggie babies need to walk and learn to follow the leader. Walking is much better for them, it makes their muscles strong and teaches them to look to you for directions. They learn by watching and doing what the leader does.
2. Potty Prep
The mother dog begins to push the puppies out of the nest area to potty at 4 weeks, at 6 weeks they follow her to the potty place and copy her behavior. So you have to pick a place and take your baby about every 2 hours during the day. They really do not know they can hold urine, when they feel the urge to pee they pee. When they are 8 to 10 weeks old, they begin to understand they can wait a few minutes, you can begin true potty training. Always praise if they potty in the right place. Potty breaks should be short. Say your cue word ' POTTY NOW' give him 3 to 5 minutes to potty. If he goes, praise 'Good Potty' pet and maybe reward with off the leash play time in a fenced yard. You are teaching him potty first, then sniff and play is ok.

LOL I don't mean to write my book here. But puppy training is my passion. Everything they learn the first 24 weeks of life forms their basic outlook on life. So it is so important to set up a good foundation of training and social behavior.

Well......Roxy went to the vet for her first shots and a check up. Good news is she is healthy and weights 2.5 lbs. Bad news is the vet thinks she is barely 6 weeks old!!! She is now on canned food and has a tube of Nutra Cal! The vet gave her a talk about hypoglycemia and the signs. She is to immediately bring her in if there are any signs of weakness and sleepyness.
