| help with water drinking My gal is restricted to a crate for 6 weeks due to leg surgery. She gets plenty of "out time" for a good scratch and hugs. anyway in the last couple days she is refusing her water in a bowl. She will lick it off my hand but wont drink from the bowl. She used to drink around 2 full bowls a day. I do have a hanging water bottle in her crate which I suspect she is drinking from when im not looking as it has gone down and I dont think its due to leakage. (i have seen her use it when im out of the room & thats what she drank out of in her last home, I put it back up because they didnt want her spilling her water onto her stitches)She is eating and peeing fine. I have resorted to mixing her breakfast/dinner with homemade no salt turkey broth with plenty of water that after a few looks of "no thanks" she gobbles up and licks the bowl. She has no signs of dehydration. Is she trying to punish me a little or is it maybe she requires less because she is barely moving? (dr.'s orders) How muchwater should a non excercising yorkie need? She was drinking a ton the first week but maybe that was due to the antibiotics and anesthesia? Or am I spoiling her by giving in to her? Maybe she is getting plenty? Its so hard.....aarghh.. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Your dog needs 1/2-1 oz of water per pound. If it's hot or your dog's exercising, it would need more than if it's lying around and it's cool. It's sort of common for a dog to become frightened of its bowl, especially aluminum bowls, I don't know if they see their reflection and it scares them or what. Sometimes, animals get a little sick and attribute the feeling to the last thing they remember doing, so this could make them avoid a bowl. Unless, very ill, an animal will usually drink all the water it needs, so coaxing to drink water really isn't necessary. For those that eat canned food, since it contains a lot of water, no additional water may even be necessary. My guess is your dog is drinking out of the water bottle, don't forget to put fresh water in it every day. Even clean water can start producing too much bacteria after a couple of days. The chlorine that keeps water sanitary evaporates when exposed to air.

| I always use a glass bowl and make sure I wash it with hot soapy water everyday. They can get a belly ache from time to time if the bacteria level gets high in the water dish. I just find glass easier to clean than metal and she seems to prefer it as well. When Gracie was drinking very little water I started using my bottled water and pouring it into a bowl in front of her. She just loved trying to drink out of the water that was pouring into the bowel. You know how they love fresh water out of a faucet. She also like partially melted ice cubes. Since your girl knows how to drink out of the bottle in her crate she is probably drinking that when she needs it. Gracie uses pee pads so I can tell if she is hydrated enough by checking out the color of her urine. If they are drinking as they should the urine will be mostly clear. More concentrated urine is much more yellow and in smaller amounts. Keeping the kidneys flushed out is important to their long term health. |

I use white disposable pee pads so it is quite evident. Our vet was quite adamant about getting her to drink more. As long as I make sure she is getting plenty of fresh clean water she is good about it. The ice cubes in the summer help a lot. | |

| even when she was drinking alot her urine is always yellow... I have ceramic bowls so all she sees is a princess design... she is getting zero excercise so I guess she needs less. She pees every few hours, in the morning its like a flood, (she holds it 8 hours) Maybe she relates confinement with the water bowl..dont know why. I give her a good 2 ounces of water at breakfast mixed in her food, a crushed ice cube or two during the day and another 2 ounces with her food at night. So I guess shes fine..thanks for the imput. It just changed so much I was concerned.. |

| Well I realize Im mixing almost 3oz of water with her breakfast and again at dinner plus has a crushed ice cube a day. Considering shes only 5.75 lbs I guess she is getting more than enough. . my kids put two bowls of water on the ground and started lapping out of them to coax her. She sniffed around, took a lap or two out of one of them but that was it. It was a cute idea though. |

When Cali was sick last year I used the white disposable piddle pads as a guide to how much output she was having. Like the others said, it is always yellow.
