| Weight gain? My 2 girls are now a year old. When I brought them I was expecting standard size as there parents where around 7lb. I weighed my 2 girls today and they are 2lb 10oz and 3lb. Should I be trying to get them to gain? And if so what extra can I feed to plump them up?

| Are they skinny or just small? Either way, I'd be heading to the vet for testing to rule out anything medical and discuss with the vet if they need plumping or not, and the best way to do it.

| They have been to the vets, as I was concerned and they said they were not concerned as they are both very similar, also that they are very active and not lethargic at all.

| JMHO, but they are both 4 lbs less than they were expected to be. One or two pounds okay, but 4 is more than half the amount they were expected to be. Just as a precaution, I'd be running kidney and liver tests on them, to rule out any problems with their metabolism. If they're fine, then I'd ask the vet to access their overall body condition: Body Condition Scoring Chart | College of Veterinary Medicine to be sure their frame can handle additional weight. If it can't, additional weight will put undue stress on the leg and hip joints. I can't say yes or no to your question without seeing them and doing a hands-on exam to access their actual body condition, and proportions. I do know that when changing a diet to either lose or gain weight, it should be done gradually, and their weight should be checked on a regular basis to make sure you're getting the expected results.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I agree, this would concern me too. Liver shunt can cause a dog to be on the smaller side, but the sooner you catch LS, the better the prognosis. Best of luck, I hope it's just genetics and they're fine.

| I aggree with having the vet do some lab tests to make all as it should be. As a side note my friend breeds Yorkies she has one pair that has one or two tinies each litter. The mom is about 6 pounds and the dad is 5 pounds. The father's stud was only 3 pounds. So she thinks this is where it comes from. She does not breed for tinies, she says they are much harder to place in the perfect home. She only will place them with stay at home/ work from home parent who do not/ can not have children !

| I remember Remy gained about 1 1/2 pounds after she turned a year. Her parents were 5 lbs. and she was only a little over 3 lbs at 1 year. I was so happy when she gained up to 4 pounds because she was so skinny!! I agree, check them out. Maybe do a blood work, you would need to before spay and/or teeth cleaning anyway. But do not panic yet
