| Heartworms Are heartworms common in the Bay Area near Fremont and the automall? Before we actually start the pills with dogs we must get a blood test first right? What are some pros and cons with dogs taking heartworm medicine? Has anyone had problems with the medication? Calvin is 8 pounds and 2 years old. |

YT 500 Club Member | Im not sure and I hope others can help. Honey had a test done to see if she had worms but I had already started giving her heartworm medicine before I got her checked. Also the test they did was not a blood test. Honey is 3.7 pounds and is 10 months. I have not had a problem with it and she eats eat like its candy lol. |

| I've heard somewhere that they need to be tested before you can get heartworm medication. |

YT 500 Club Member | Im hoping that someone that knows more will come and let you know because Im not sure. Now that I think about it they did take a little drop of blood from her on her first visit so that might have been what it was for. They told me she didnt have them so I guess thats about right. I give her a pill every month for hearworms but I know a lot of people that dont. |

| Hey there neighbor! Zeus is not on heartworm medication. I would only be really concerned with it if we took him to the beach a lot, or to the reservoir/lake.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | They have to test to make sure they aren't infected with heartworms, when they get the medication. I guess if they are already in the heart, the medication would kill the worms, but this isn't good for the heart. You want to kill the worms before they reach the heart. I really don't think there are any cons to taking the medication. It's really safe in that your dog could eat a 6 month supply and not be harmed. We use it in AZ even though there are few mosiquitoes here, the boys love going for walks, and all it takes is one infected mosiquoto. Another reason I treat is it's a very painful disease, if your dog gets it, it will really suffer, some rescues put the dogs to sleep instead of curing it because they say it's so painful and treatment is so difficult. I would never forgive myself if one of my babies got it and I hadn't at least tried to prevent it.

| Puppies do not need to be tested but adult dogs do. When I started my adult dogs on heartworm 8years ago, I did nit know about the medication. They tested my dogs and I am glad they did because my lab ended up having heartworm. She got from our visit to the mountains. If she got the meds first she would have died from blockage. We had to treat the worms first. 3 months crated while taking medication was a nightmare for a young active lab who did not know she was sick. |

| The process of treatment is not painful just mentally hard on them as all activity needs to be confined for 3 months. Difficult on them and us for active pup |

YT 2000 Club Member | I just stared Teeka on Heartgard Plus. My vet told me if I started her on it as a puppy she would be fine and didn't need the test first. Others might disagree, but this is what we did!

| Personally, I would be afraid to rely on the odds and not try to prevent heartworms. Here is a map that shows the reported positives from vet clinics: Google Image Result for http://www.k911.biz/images/HeartwormMap.png

| We did slow kill method, so no adverse effects on dog. Maybe the injections are painful because with the slow kill my dog had no issues just cabin fever from being cooped up. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yeah, after reading that, it seems like the slow kill method might be a lot less painful with less complications. What's odd is that they use the same meds as what I give monthly anyway. I agree, containing them would be so difficult.

To the OP, I live in Georgia and we are advised to treat our dogs 12 months a year with a Heartworm preventative.
