| Newbie here Hello Everyone! I'm new to the community and a new owner of a 12 week old male yorkie. I actually just got him a couple of days ago and would love to have some answers to a few of my questions. 1. He is very scared like someone has been mean to him, When I go to pick him up he will get down on all fours and kind of shake, I don't think that is normal for a 12 week old. I saved him from a house with about 8 kids (no joke), so that may have something to do with it, not sure though. 2. Also his hair looks awful, I gave him a bath when I brought him old and then brushed his hair out but it still doesn't look nice. So I was wondering if I should take him to get a hair cut with him being so young. 3. He is full blooded however I don't have any papers on him or any shot records so I'm calling the Vet on Tuesday to make an appointment to get him checked out. I purchased him off of Craigslist for a very low amount, so I'm hoping that there isn't something wrong with him for him to be sold so cheap. 4. Now on to the happy things, He is black and brown, however he has some light silver hair coming through on top of his head, does that mean when his coat grows out more that his hair will end up being a different color then it is now? Also what is a good brush that some of you use that really gets into the hair and brushes it, I purchased a brush however it's cheap and only brushes the hair on top. Sorry for such a random post, as you can tell I'm a new yorkie owner and have tons of questions. Thank you! |

| welcome to yt, he is still a very young puppy his texture and color will go through alot of change as he grows up and right now is too early for him to go to the groomers he is already adjusting to you and the groomer may be alittle to chaotic for him at this age, wishing you guys a long and healthy life together have fun with your new puppy!

| Welcome to YT! I agree - try to get his past medical records from the person you bought him from. I don't want to be a downer, but getting him cheap from Craigslist could give you problems later. It might not. I found Mandie on Craigslist before I found this forum. So far I have been lucky, but she was not from a reputable breeder that guarantees health and tests the parents..therefore she may end up having genetic issues later..as may yours. I don't want to scare you..just prepare you to be especially attentive to any changes in health or behavior. Definitely get this little one to the vet for check up. And, keep nutrical on hand and research signs of hypoglycemia, ok? I mainly wanted to say Welcome and ask any questions you have. We love all Yorkies and we are here for you The last thing...about the cowering when going to pick up..Mandie still does this at 10 months old. I believe their size makes it especially scary to see a huge human bending over them Do what I did from the time I got Mandie..it makes a difference...kneel down on the floor to the pup's level and then pick him up.

There isn't any records that they could provide me, and they didn't have any information about any records from the person that they bought him from. I hate to have his shots started if it's already been done before, however there isn't anyway to find out. He has an appointment on Monday with the vet, we are going to start his first shots then.

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on the new addition. Everyone above gave great advice. Definitely get into the vet right away for a wellness check and vaccination schedule. Hopefully you can get documentation from the breeder on whether he has received shots already. Hair -- my Max looked like a muppet most of the time when he was a pup. As Ann wrote, just go with it for awhile until he is acclimated to his new home and has vaccinations. Comb and clip (if you can work with him safely) at home. Brushes -- use something that doesn't have balls on the tips. I sell All Systems brushes and a few combs. YT member Mimimomo sells the very popular Madan brushes and combs on her site: toplinepet.com A little mustache/leg comb is a must have with a good brush.

| Well I'm terrible then! I took Lilly to Petsmart because I had a free puppy bath, nail clip, ear clean, etc. She went Saturday, stayed for 3 hours and came out with a little fluorescent green bow on her head. She doesn't seem any worse for wear. My vet says they can go where other dogs have gone, but to probably avoid walks in the park or dog parks, etc, since she could get into a scuffle and hasn't had rabies yet. She's had 2 sets of shots though. I doubt I take her to any groomer regularly though. My poor old cat died a week after being groomed and I was right there with her. They are terribly rough! |

I don't want to have him groomed all the time I don't think, I just want him trimmed up a little, as he is looking shabby. There is a grooming place in the town where I live and I've heard nothing but good things about her, I'm going to see if I can stay and watch though to make sure everything goes good and he get's treated good.

| Welcome to YT! Congrats on your new baby. I would visit the vet and at least get 1 set of shots before going to the groomer. If you can't get records just start from scratch, it's better to re-vaccinate then not vaccinate at all, no matter how clean a groomers place may look germs can be hiding everywhere and you wouldnt want your new baby sick. Talk to your vet about spacing the vaccines apart so he doesnt get too many pokes in one day. Hope to see some pics and hear more about your pup soon!
