| few more first time owner questions I had posted previously with some questions I had...thanks to everyone for helping! I love this site!! So informative! Ok - my next questions: 1. When we are home, we have trained our little puppy to potty outside. He's doing very well...just a few minor accidents in the home. When we are gone, we put him in our small half bathroom and have been putting puppy pads in there as well. He has taken to them very well and is using them. Is this ok to do both? We want to make sure that he knows if he can, he needs to go outside.....suggestions? 2. Our little guy is really starting to bite! he is 9 weeks old now...is this too early for them to start teething? He is constantly wanting to naw on our fingers and anything he can find!! Anything I can do for him or any suggestions during this time? 3. His coat isn't quite as shiny as I thought it would be or as it was when we first brought him home. Any suggestions on how to make it shiny and healthy? I am currently feeding him Pedigree puppy care (what the breeder was feeding him)....is this a good food or should I switch to something else? |

| Puppies should stay with there moms until 12 weeks and one of the things she teaches them in bite inhibition and that is why he is biting so you might want to search teaching bite inhibition. At 9 weeks you also should not be leaving him for two long at a time because of hypoglycemia.

| The dont start losing teeth "usually: till 4-6 months. But puppies love to bite. And like already mentioned, when taken away from their mother before 12-16 weeks they miss out on alot of behavioral lessons from their mother and siblings. SO what i did was, everytime farley started biting me, i would make a yelp high pitched sound that startled him enough to make him stop and hand him a toy that he could chew on. ALso- how long are you leaving him alone? I think as long as he takes to both the potty pad and outside you are probably safe. I personally think it can be confusing to a puppy so young to try to teach him to go outside if he is also allowed to go inside. So i am assuming you dont leave him home alone more than 2 hours at a time, in which i would make sure he gets to go outside to potty each time if this is what you eventually want him to do. Also a few accidents in the house are definatly to be expected with such a young puppy. Also pedigree is not a very high quality food, and you may want to look into a grain free food. You will probably notice a big difference in his hair after switching to a high quality food. There are alot of threads here on good foods to feed. Good luck with your puppy. HE looks sooo cute!! |

| 1: That is fine to do. I wouldn't allow him to go outside alone. My Peanut is 5 and still doesn't go potty alone. He is small at 4 lbs- 2: If you go to Petsmart you will find the “kong” toys they even have “puppy” kongs- I would look into those. That will be great for teething. When he does bite you tell him No, then give him something to chew on ( one of his teething toys) 3: I personally don’t like Pedigree- I would look into some other foods and get him on something more of a high quality.

| Hi Megan! Welcome, and congrats on your precious little boy! I have no advice to give on the potty training, as I'm a newb struggling with it. Teething - I say No! in a firm, but not yelling voice, and offer something that is okay to chew. If your little guy is having new teeth soreness, try giving him a frozen carrot stick. Food -How long have you had him home? Sorry, I missed your first posts. I agree with others who have said there are much better options available than Pedigree. BUT!!!! If he's eating it with no problems, it's not going to hurt him to keep feeding it to him in the beginning, until he's settled in. He's going through a huge change of surroundings, people, and schedule, etc. I would wait a couple more weeks before trying to change his food. In hindsight, I desperately wish I had kept my Sam on the same food.
