| So Mad Okay, so Chloe will be 6 months at the end of March. I like my vet alot. I've used him for 6 years now with my other dogs (labs) So, I inquire today when getting her 3rd shots and rabies about spaying. He charges $150.00 I ask if they do pre-op bloodwork. He says no, we just take their temps before So I ask about pain meds. He gives them a shot of pain meds before the procedure. It lasts 24 hours. Nothing for after So, now I will be looking for a new vet to do this. How can they be so heartless on such small, sweet animals? Sorry, i just needed to vent. Thanks for listening. I will be calling around the area asking other vets the same questions. If you have any other questions I should ask, please let me know.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | For $150.00 I wouldn't expect blood work nor pain meds. Those are additional fees. Ask if they use isoflurane as for anesthesia. Also inquire if the animal is "required" to stay overnight...IF there are medical personal there during that time. If not, I'd take my dog home as no one is monitoring them. Btw I wouldn't advise ever getting multiple vaccinations at the same time.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I don't think all doctors automatically do the pre-op blood work, I know many people here have had to specifically ask for it. I think it’s more important in breeds prone to liver problems, and that’s why many here suggest it. What’s wrong with the one shot for pain relief, I think it’s a pretty good idea, and probably much safer than lots of oral meds. I have read that rabies shouldn’t be given with the other shots. Bottom line is if you’re not comfortable with your vet and you’ve lost confidence in him, it’s probably best to find someone else. I don’t think I’d automatically look for someone else, just because he doesn’t do pre-op blood work, some vets are trying to save you money, contrary to what people post here. Oh wow, I didn't realize $150 was the cost of the neuter, I thought that was for the shots.

| We have a wonderful vet who only charges 150 for the actual spay, bloodwork was another 75 and she uses IV isoflurane. Also gave pain meds for after. I would find a vet that specializes in small animals to do this if I were you. Even Laddy's neuter was done with an IV.

| I didn't know not to get the rabies shot with the others. They advised me to get them both. I didn't say the shot was bad. I just figured she might need something for after for any pain. They said she does not stay overnight. I drop her off early and pick her up that afternoon.

Additionally, my vet always: has an IV infusing, with glucose, the entire procedure, and post op as well....they d/c the IV right before the dog is released to me. Always does pre-op blood work, checking liver, kidney function. My vet uses an IV pump to deliver accurate IV fluid rates to the dogs.....or they use a type of IV that has a chamber (buretrol) that hangs below the IV bag...they put a specific amount of fluid in the chamber and infuse from there....this keeps your pet from getting too much fluid during and after the procedure...(I had a vet kill one of my babies by giving too much fluid...so THIS safety measure is very important to me and absolutely a deal breaker if they do not use Ivac pumps or Buretrols on their infusions.!) Always get pain medicine......my vet gives Tobuterol (Tobutrol ?sp?) in Vitamino...It is a liquid, it works really well, is very easy to dose, is well tolerated....it is great. I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Okay, that's just what I was just going to ask you, I really think it's wise to find a vet who specializes in small breeds. Like Bchgirl says, it's so important that the right anesthesia be used and also that they have the smaller tubes available. Joey was allergic to his pain meds, so I would have loved a shot to have been given.

| Hi Michelle. I look at Vets like I do, people doctors. For tiny people You need a tiny people doctor ( like a pediatrician) My husband has a good but different Vet for Lily she is a Lab and a trained cadaver dog. His Vet treats the police canine unit. And is well know for his orthopedic surgery skill and his invative water therapy techique. My Vet treats mostly show dogs and many many toy dogs. So find a Vet that is great with Yorkies and that you trust.

| Our vets dont do pre-op blood work either, they do make you awnser a bunch of questions about the dogs general health and the dog is weighed and has its temp taken, but that´s it. Also,as a rule, dogs arent even put under general anesthetic to be spayed/neutered here. They are given a sedative and then local anesthetic to the area.So right after they´re done, they go home. When I had my previous male fixed,he was in and out in about an hour and he was given a shot for pain before the sedative wore off. After that,he didnt need anything else.
