| Thinking of getting a yorkie but have questions My husband and I are thinking of getting a yorkie puppy. The concern that we have is that we both work Monday thru Friday from 6 am till 3:30 pm. We know that is along time to leave a puppy in a crate and to not be able to go potty. Should we use a pen and put a potty pad down. Will he still go outside if he gets use to the potty pad inside the house? Can anyone help with this issue. Any recommendations please:: |

| I would just train to pads and then when the pup has that down try adding the outside both at the same times would be a but confusing. A play pen is great. Make sure you are getting a pup from a reputable breeder and your pup is not coming home before 12 weeks or it will need someone with them every couple of hours. I think I would have a pet sitter come over and check on your pup around lunch time if you can not make it home to check on the pup.

| A playpen would be great- Pee pad, blanket, bed, toys, something to chew on, food, water- you can even hook up a hamster bottle so the puppy wont spill the water or play in it. People work, that doesnt mean you cant get a puppy- Myself and Dh work full time- When I brought Pnut home I was working 12 hour days. Pnut was safe and sound everytime I or DH got home. It sucks to leave them that long, but it is what it is, you just have to make sure they have everything the need! When you are home- start taking him potty outside- Pnut is pad trained, but will still potty outside. Also in the morning before you leave for work dedicate an hour -1/2 to the puppy for play time, also making sure the puppy eats is important.

| I am on #2 now and I will say Xpen will be your best friend BUT you still need to have them used to crates so I crate at night right next to my bed... Puppy pads are great Guinness was started on a pad and now knows to go outside BUT with our Fl rains if it is bad raining that week I keep pads on hand to have for those moments but even then I have to do it in the garage or else he feels like he will get in trouble for going inside... Granted I have caught him marking his new sister once I work 8:30 to 5:30 and my husband could leave the house anywhere from 7am to 10am and come home anywhere from 5pm to 8pm and we do just find.. He even has to leave out of town from time to time in fact he was not here the first 11 months we had Guinness. So you would be fine... Just make sure you know and research the breed and how hard to potty train and stubborn they can be and make sure you and him are up for this breed... I would never talk somebody out of a Yorkie BUT I want to make sure they know what they are getting them selfs in for hahaha because they are truly like none other.

| Do you have anyone that you could trust to come by and check on a pup while you work?

| I worked in an our Corporate office when I got Sophie Kate, I always crate trained her in the morning and had a dog walker come in at noon and take her for a 30 minute walk. As Sophie Kate matured she would get limited roam in the afternoon (kitchen area gated off) and a pad down. Just like Guiness Sophie Kate is pad trained and outdoor trained, it took a while for both. The method that worked for me is she had to learn the command "go potty" once she had that down it was a case of using the command outdoors. In Georgia with our rainy season I have no choice but to train her for both (Princess does not like to potty in the rain however she will stomp through a puddle like she is a super model).

| You can always use a webcam to watch her during the day. I did this with Brandi when I first got her. I just wanted to make sure she was okay and wasn't suffering from separation anxiety. She is trained to use potty pads and go outside. She now has run of the house because I trust her completely. I don't watch her that much anymore unless I think she isn't feeling to well. The webcam is the next best thing when you don't have anyone to watch your baby. I also use the webcam when I go away for the weekend and the cat is home alone for a few days. |

I got my two Yorkies after they were a year old, and they have always had free roam. They mostly go outside with close supervision, but, like GuinnessStout said, sometimes the rain in FL is incessant. I have put them in their raincoats, carried them one at a time outside, and walked around holding MY umbrella over THEIR heads while walking in the rain and getting soaked myself and still had them refuse because their feet were...ewwww...getting wet. lol But, that's okay because I also have a few 'emergency' puddle pads down for them, too. A puppy will be different because their bodies are immature and they just cannot wait very long when they are young, so, containment of some kind...ex-pen, etc...with pads is likely going to be essential. His/her crate should be a 'safe' place where s/he is comfortable and 'wants' to be, so putting the crate in the containment area would be fine...but I'd separate the potty space from it.

| If your puppy is going to be alone for that long then a pen is the best idea. A young puppy cannot hold it's urine so it would be having accidents in a crate all day long if no one is there to let it out often. A good lock down frame for the puppy pads is a good idea so the puppy does not get bored and eat the puppy pad while you are gone. I trained Gracie to puppy pads and when she got older she learned to go outside. I started taking her for walks and she just loved being able to pee outside! I still keep the puppy pads available for when I am not going to be home for several hours or when the weather is bad. She is good going either way. |

| I always recommend two excellent books for all my new owners..."Yorkies For Dummies", and "Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide"....you will get all the information you could ever think of in these two books, to start you out...and they are great reference books for the life of your baby! I have always used an ex-pen, and put down pee pads in the bottom, bed, food and water, and toys...I leave a TV on for them to concentrate on when their minds begin to wander....BE SURE YOU GET YOUR BABY FROM A REPUTABLE BREEDER....she will have a healthy, happy, well socialized baby for you! AND THE BABY WILL BE AT LEAST 12-14 WEEKS OLD, AND STARTED ON VACCINATIONS! There may be an interview application you have to fill out, as she wants to be sure her baby is going to a wonderful home....there should be a contract with a health guarantee you sign....just some things to think about...there are lists in those two books, what you need to be looking for in a good breeder.... |

This and everything posted above are perfect answers. No reason at all for you not to get a puppy just because you both work. I have nothing to add except, Happy Hunting and Welcome to YT!!

| I have a 13 week old and I leave him in an X-pen with a potty pad, water, food, bedding and toys. My parents are retired and come and spend the day with him, but Cooper is alone for about four hours in the morning because I leave for work at 6:00 am. I was worried that once he was used to using the potty pads he wouldn't want to go outside, but the breeder assured me that it would just take a bit of time and as long as I used the same potty command, he would learn to go outside. Please don't let the fact that you and your husband both work deter you from the love and joy that comes from being parents to a Yorkie. They truly are the sweetest in the world, and I cannot imagine what my life would be like without Cooper in it. Good luck, and please keep us posted.

| Thank everyone so much for the great information. We are really leaning towards getting one this summer. I am an avid gardner so the new dog would be outside with me alot in the afternoon and weekends. I was thinking of trying to find a teanager come by at noon to take the dog out for awhile every day since it would be summer and they would not be in school. My other question is it is hard to find a year old or close it it puppy? Also how do you find a good breeder in my area? I live in the Leesburg Virginia area. |
