| I have also read that combining raw with kibble is not a good thing. Kibble digests much more slowly than raw. I think if you just give kibble occasionally it is OK but if you were feeding both daily it could be a problem. It puts stress on the digestive system....at least that is what the holistic vet whose blog I read sometimes says. I don't have experience with it myself. |

| I'm semi very concerned now and emailed the nutricianist we have worked with asking about bloat. I was advised originally, considering some medical issue situations, concerns that kibble may be the only avalible option at a time and the advice was to yes change over to raw, but the continually feed some kibble so they will be continually used to eating and digesting it... No one mentiined bloat other than in concerns of the innitial change ovet time to raw. Although I had already had the dogs on a grain free higher protein diet and they were used to raw fruits and vegis as treats then, just not meats. I can't find anything on the raw or barf forums we utalize other than talking about general kibble feeding concerns and why people prefer raw diets.

| Is feeding a freeze dried raw an option? It can be stored for long periods of time and is highly digestible. In case of emergency we are all gong to be dealing with a lot of things being unavailable, pet food being one of them. |

| Too true. I get sample bags of kibble and keep them in Buster's earthquake kit. Each of us has an earthquake kit. Buster's is in his rolling carrier and I keep bowls, extra harness and leash, blankets, potty pads, a bottle of water etc in it. You never know when Mother Nature is going to hit.

| Yes we do feed Stella and Chewy's along with fresh raw. We keep rotating a package in our emergency kit. However the issue is during the times myself or one of the kids is in the hospital our sitter or my family isn't comfortable handling raw for more than the 2 day packets I have made, of course I've never left the dogs for more than 2 days either. honestly I need to just network better in the local raw feeding group we have here but I don't entirely trust anyone there enough at least yet to pet sit for us. Kibble continuation has just been a safety crutch we probably need to stop leaning on anyways.

| You can go from Raw to kibble and back again if your dog is used to it in their diet.

| I've read too that digestive enzymes are not to be given if feeding raw... I don't know if it causes a problem or not, and I think the raw already has DE in it.

| Quote: Canola Facts and Information <Begin Quote> Seed Types/Common Varieties Innovations in canola, through the introduction of herbicide tolerance, has reduced farmers’ costs and the use of natural resources in its production. In Canada there are three main groups of herbicide-resistant canola: Roundup Ready and Liberty Link varieties that were produced using genetic modification, (1)and Clearfield varieties that were developed using a traditional plant breeding technique called mutagenesis. The transgenic gene inserted into the canola plant to produce Roundup Ready and Liberty Link InVigor herbicide resistance is a protein. All protein is removed from canola oil during processing, so canola oil contains no GM material and is identical to canola oil from a non-GM canola plant. (2) Another innovation is the development of hybrid canola varieties. Hybrids can increase yields and are increasing in acreage. New Roundup Ready, InVigor and Clearfield hybrids have been introduced and hybrids are expected to be sown on 80 percent of canola acreage in 2007. <End Quote> (1) How can you be certain that the canola oil you are consuming is NOT of the two GMO varieties: Roundup Ready and Liberty Link ? (2) If the canola contains "no GM material" why is it necessary to state that it is "identical to a non-GMO canola plant"? Is there some 'hair-splitting' and /or semantic manipulation going on in that statement? How does a "transgenic gene" get "inserted into" any plant, and if the plant is "Roundup Ready" you can bet it has been sprayed with the pesticide brand, Roundup. So, what does "transgenic" mean and what is a "transgenic gene" that it could be "inserted into" a plant without being a GM (genetically modified) product? Note: transgenics spans at least both plants and animals ...begin quoted section... Transgenic Crops: An Introduction and Resource Guide What Are Transgenic Plants? A transgenic crop plant contains a gene or genes which have been artificially inserted instead of the plant acquiring them through pollination. The inserted gene sequence (known as the transgene) may come from another unrelated plant, or from a completely different species: transgenic Bt corn, for example, which produces its own insecticide, contains a gene from a bacterium. Plants containing transgenes are often called genetically modified or GM crops, although in reality all crops have been genetically modified from their original wild state by domestication, selection and controlled breeding over long periods of time. On this web site we will use the term transgenic to describe a crop plant which has transgenes inserted. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK21632/ Section 8.5Gene Replacement and Transgenic Animals Other techniques permit the introduction of foreign genes or altered forms of an endogenous gene into an organism. For the most part, these techniques do not result in replacement of the endogenous gene, but rather in the integration of additional copies of it. Such introduced genes are called transgenes; the organisms carrying them are referred to as transgenics. … Production of both knockout and transgenic organisms requires the transfer of DNA into eukaryotic cells TRANSGENIC PROCEDURES The ability to insert an exogenous (or foreign) gene into the mouse genome by direct injection into the pronuclei of zygotes was achieved just two decades ago (1). The term transgenic was applied to mice expressing exogenous DNA that had been produced using this technique (2). With this method, the gene of interest is inserted into a random locus in the mouse genome, and is expressed ‘‘in trans,’’ i.e., not in its usual genetic locus. Error Transgene Design A transgene is an artificial gene, and transgene design must incorporate all appropriate elements critical for gene expression. A simple construction scheme has been developed that provides the best transgene expression: each transgene contains a promoter, an intron, a protein coding sequence (termed the reporter), and transcriptional stop sequence. These elements are typically assembled in a bacterial plasmid, and sequences are usually chosen from previous transgenes with proven function. In addition, the construct must be linearized and prokaryotic sequences removed before injection into the nucleus of a mouse zygote. Synthetic promoters have also been designed for inducible gene expression and other specialized applications. What Is Hydrogenated Oil? Trans fat: Avoid this cholesterol double whammy - MayoClinic.com http://cspinet.org/new/pdf/trans_q_a.pdf Center for Science in the Public Interest hydrogenated oils At first, it sounds like nonsense. But then you realize, after learning more, that the World Health Organization tried to outlaw this ingredient decades ago. (Emphasis here is mine) You find out that hundreds of doctors, researchers and scientists are blatantly warning us about the detrimental health effects of this ingredient. And you learn that this substance causes cancer, birth defects, heart disease, diabetes and many other fatal diseases. In fact, this substance causes a cell-by-cell failure of the human body by destroying the porosity and flexibility of healthy cell membranes. It's like tearing your body down from the inside out. What ingredient am I talking about? Hydrogenated oils, of course. ...end of quoted section... There is much more available for those who choose to research...I warn you, you may not like all of it.
