Yorkie Yakker | New pup. Potty outside? Inside? Both? I pick up my 8 week old Yorkie-Poo in less than two weeks. I live in the midwest and it’s FREEZING outside right now. I’ve heard that housebreaking is very difficult. Here’s where the conflicting information comes in. The first breeder I visited warned me about taking the pup outside before it’s had all of its shots because of the chance of picking up Parvo that lives in the ground for up to 10 years. I have a fenced backyard, but the previous owners had two small dogs and I don’t know their history – and I’ve only lived here for 9 months. So that makes me a little nervous about taking the pup outside. Not to mention the freezing temps right now. I’m wondering if he would go at all! So this breeder told me that instead, I should put the pup and it’s crate, etc. inside a pen – in the house – and use hospital pads (all-fabric potty pads) in the pen for the pup to go potty on. But this seems conflicting to me because ultimately, I want the dog to be able to do its biz outside. Some folks I work with, suggested I put a pad by the backdoor where I want the pup to go out - so at least he's close to the preferred spot. I have no clue what to do...

| well, 8 weeks is very young and I live in Missouri where it is very cold right now too I think if it were me I would let your pup go inside for now. I am sorry to say I dont have experience with inside potty as Charlie has always gone outside but he was 6 months when he came to live with us. Training him wasnt hard tho. we made sure to put his food out for him and took him out about 15-20 minutes after each feeding and when he had a drink then praised him like nothing else when he went. it took a weekend to train him. Im sure there are YTers that do the indoor potty thing and they will give excellent advise on that. A thought tho... if you are set on them going outside, if you have a porch you could get one of those potty patches of grass and take your pup out to that after feeding and put them on the potty patch then as it warms up move that potty patch closer to the grass in the yard. again its just an idea, just make sure you go out with them and dont let them stay out to long.

| Hi Paris Rain, welcome to YT, your pup is adorable. I am in the same boat you are in but I have been perusing this site for a couple of weeks and I will share with you what we plan to do, maybe it will help... We pick up our Princess Sophie after Feb 4th and plan to have her use both the inside (potty pads) and the outside. We will have her use only potty pads until she has had all her vaccines as that is safest for our pup. We will be taking her for walks and going outside with her to potty in our fenced in backyard when the Vet gives the ok. We are doing it this way because we also travel and when we take our pups with us, we want Sophie to be able to use a potty pad inside while she is younger. When she is older we will most likely just have her using the outside potty and pick up after her like we do with our Schnauzer (Hansel). This may not be what you want to do but we feel it will work best for us. You have to decide to do what will work best for you. I'm sure there will be other YT'rs out there that will have different suggestions depending on what you are looking for. Welcom again, and good luck with your Chewie!!

Yorkie Yakker | Very good advice from both of you - thank you. I think I'm thinking about it too much, you know? lol I guess I'm just a little confused because this will be my first tiny dog (had a boxer 10 years ago) and he's going to be so young, and it's so dang cold outside right now... blargh.

| We started our girls out on pads inside the expen attached to a crate. This way they have room to play with toys, have a pet water bottle attached to the side of the expen and we even put a blanket over the crate to make it den-like, and of course nice thick crate pads and blanket. I took them outside about every hour (weather permitting) for more play and some basic training. I never let them have any run of the house while in training. Now they go to the door when they want outside, but they are also pad trained which works super nice when we need to leave them for a little while, and also works great when we travel either in the coach or if we go in a motel. We don't like going out after dark, early morning or in the rain when we are in a motel or coach, so they use their disposable pads. I dearly love that they are trained to pads and outside.

| Agreed! The balcony above us has slits and if it's a heavy ran, it literally drops buckets of water and you're absolutely soaked! So Zeus will go on the pads. He'll go outside before the pads unless it's pouring. I don't have much to add, but I love the name Zeus was ALMOST a little Chewbacca.

| Lilly will be 9 weeks on Tuesday and I have her pad trained. I've started giving her little soft treats after she goes successfully on the pad. It's working like a charm. I plan to do both, indoor and outdoor, as the weather gets warmer and she gets fully vaccinated, but ultimately if I have to go to work for 8 hours a day or out to run errands, I will feel better having a couple of pads down so I know if something holds me up, she can go potty in the right place without having to make a big mess. |

| Hello and welcome to YT! We trained Jack to go on potty pads to start with. He was really small when I brought him home and I didn't want him exposed to parvo, fleas or anything else he might catch outside without having all of his immunizations. Then after his immunizations were all done and the weather broke (we live in Northeast Ohio) we started taking him out. He is 3 years old now and prefers to go outside but will use the potty pad if the weather is really really bad. Izzy is 8 months old and we have her potty pad trained - mainly for the same reasons but she will potty outside when we go on walks. We do travel on occasion and I love the fact that they will go either inside or outside, depending on whatever the situation is. It is really a win-win if you can train them to do both.

Thanks for all the advice, gang. I appreciate it! I'll train on pads to begin with and then start taking him outside when his shots are finished.

| My little guy goes on his pee pads and also outside. Wouldn't have it any other way. I have always had a pet that was trained to go outside. But, boy is it nice now when it is pouring rain and freezing cold and we do not have to take the little guy outside. Best of both worlds. |

| I have trained many dogs over the years and they were all outside trained until Gracie. She was trained to potty pads and later she learned to go outside. At 8 weeks your puppy has a long ways to go until it is totally potty trained. Young puppies need to be near a potty. They can't hold their urine back so they will go where ever they happen to be. Until the pup is around 4 months of age you just have to be able to get the pup to the potty on time. Having a play pen for when you can't watch the pup is really important since it should never be allowed to run around without supervision. They sell puppy pads that have a hormone on them that attracts the puppy to the pad so it will pee there, but they have to be close by. Some are better than others. They also sell liquid house breaking aids that you can put on the hospital pads. You can outside train the puppy but it is going to mean you have to get yourself out the door into the cold weather very quickly and very often. It is a hard decision. The first couple of months are the most difficult. |
