| Saucy Little Turd Everytime I try and clip Yoshi's nails, he ends up snarling and really trying to bite me. Full on snarling growling and then lunging with all the force he has in his mouth. When he didn't have all his teeth, I just sort of ignored it and sternly told him no, but he has all his teeth now and his jaw is stronger. He drew blood on both my hands, and it took all I had not to full on scream at him. I very sternly told him no! in my meanest not-screaming voice, flipped him onto his back, and held him there. But the snarling keeps comin back everytime I try and do something like clip his nails or something else he really really doesn't want to do. I feel like I'm turning him into a fear biter, because that's exactly what he looked like he was doing. I really don't know what to do about it, because the thought of him turning from an annoying chewer into an actual aggressive biter when he is uncomfortable is really worrying me. What should I do?

| Cutting toe nails The first and only time that I made any attempt was to wrap her in a bath towel, two adults holding her and one cutting the nails. How the groomer does it now I have no idea, I don't even ask, but she loves the gals at the groomers, so I guess they have a secret in calming her down.. |

| Can you take him to the groomers to be done? Sometimes it's best if we love, feed & play with them, give them our 100%. And the things they don't like, someone else can do. They really are much better with other people for things they don't like to do. It's alot less stressful for you & your furbaby.

| I wanted him to get desensitized to the whole thing, but i dont want to do it at the cost of him becoming a little punk that no one can be around. is my dog the only one that tries to bite when he has to be held still? and is there anything I can do other than the standard "no bite" and time-outs to solve it? thanks guys

| I think the towel idea with two people sounds good. If it works - do it! My one dog, a bichon, does like his nails clipped either. But he is nowhere near the problem your little Yorkie is. I just clip one or two nails at a time and then play with him (and give him a treat - because this gets his attention on something else very quickly - and then let him go. This way he doesn't have enough time to get too upset. It takes me a couple of times to get through all his nails. But, it is much easier (and less traumatic) than trying to do all his nails in one sitting. I also always cut only a small part away - I know that if I ever cut too much and hurt him, he'd never forget it and would be much worse. I can say that since I am so careful and don't hurt him - he has actually become better about getting his nails cut. As a side point, I think he was hurt, in the past, getting his nails clipped at the groomers --- because he acted so afraid of having it done for such a long time. Good luck! Carol Jean |

| get tricky!! I clip Cappy's nails when he is sleeping! He doesn't mind a bit..actually sleeps right through it! LOL....maybe you should try that! I could do anything to that dog when he is sleeping and he would just go right back to sleep...hopefully your dog is the same! My mom also used to own a Dog Grooming business, and the trick to doing their nails to have them standing and just bend the leg at the knee and clip their toes behind them......its a bit harder due to the small size of a yorkie plus she always had them on a leash..... Good luck! |
