New puppy to the house I recently got Sadie and brought her home (nervously) because we already have Sophie who is 8 years old. Sophie is the queen and gets all the attention. Usually, when she sees any dog she GOES CRAZY. growling, barking, showing her teeth. It gets scary. I was nervous to bring home the baby, but she smelled her and walked away. Sophie currently will not accept her and runs away from her when I try to put Sadie near her. Any reasons as to why this may be? Any suggestions on what to do. I want them to get along :( |
It can take a little while for them to get use to another dog, especially if she is use to being the only one. When we brought our Chloe home, it took our only dog Hugo a while to get use to her. He really hated her at first, but after a couple of months they were best friends!! Hugo would lick her little head until she was soaking wet... it was soo cute! Just dont force her to like the new pup, it will just take a little time.;) |
Yes, just give it time. Make sure that Sophie is always given food and treats and loving first and just as much as Sadie. Other than that, just give it time. Sometimes they end up becoming best friends and sometimes they just end up tolerating each other. But it will take time (I've heard weeks, to months, to a year sometimes so hang in there). |
I am curious why you would get another dog when they one you have shows so much aggression toward other dogs? |
Hello. Welcome. Your dog has been the one and only for a while now. Don't try to rush her. As long as she is being nice you are doing well at this point. Try giving the puppy a bath so she smells like your home and not where ever she came from. Dogs are very scent oriented so the sooner the puppy smells right the better. Try to keep the puppy from jumping on your older dog or pestering her. Let Sophie get used to the idea of this little one being around. You don't want her to get stressed or feel jealous. Take your time, hopefully the two will at least accept each other. It may take some time and patience on your part. I hope things work out well for you. |
