| homemade doggie conditioner?? Not sure if this is the proper forum (newbie...) Has anyone ever made a homemade doggie conditioner? Indigo is ready for her first bath: the shelter fixed her and I couldn't bathe her until now. Of course she stinks to high heaven since she was caught as a stray and then was a concrete and wire cage for over a week! The smell got so bad that I trimmed her some, and sponge-bathed her with a weak vinegar rinse, which helped quite a bit. I have some oatmeal dog shampoo, and I will probably do a vinegar rinse after, but she obviously needs some type of conditioner, which I don't have on hand yet. I'm curious if anyone has made homemade conditioner? I've made human deep conditioner using vegetable glycerin, jojoba oil, olive oil, and raw aloe vera pulp (sometimes with a drop of tea tree oil) mixed with water, and I have all the ingredients on hand. Could it hurt to try? Her hair is not very long right now, maybe 1.5 inches. thanks for any thoughts! |

| You can use human conditioners (just need to use dog shampoos). I use pantene on Mandie.

| I make up a 'finishing' spray...12 oz sprayer...and add about 1/8-1/4 tsp coconut oil, and up to 20 drops of other oils like peppermint, clove, etc...and add a teensy bit...maybe 1/2 tsp of detangler sometimes. I spray it on while they are still dripping wet after their bath, gently 'press' it into their hair, then towel them off and blow dry. The oils make them smell really nice but it's not profusive, and help keep tangles minimal...even though they are very silky and shiny and do not tangle easily anyway.

| I would skip the tea tree oil, which is toxic in quantity. Not sure if it has to be ingested, but I would avoid it anyway.

| Also wanted to mention that after I shampoo and condition - after I towel Mandie off but before I blow dry her - I spray her with Argan oil. Love it and smells awesome

| Tea tree oil can be toxic to some dogs. I would just avoid it. Most essential oils are safe for dogs. I think olive oil might be a bit much for a Yorkie coat though unless it is a really good quality. The poor dog is going to feel so much better once she has a bath. I'm sure you will, too. Too bad the shelter didn't take the time to bathe her before they did the spay. |
