I now have a Yorkie. A few days ago, a lady from our local MOPs posted that she was selling her female "teacup" yorkie. I immediately snatched her up. I had asked questions and she answered(in lies) but anyway, long story short...she is with me now. The lady told me at her last vet appointment she was 2.78 lbs but she has been spoiled recently so she is currently 3.5 lbs. She said she just turned one. She said she paid $900 for her. She sent that packet of paperwork, vet records and such, THANK GOODNESS. I was really worried she didn't have them or she wouldn't bring them. In reality, on her last vet appointment she weighed right at 5 lbs, she will be two in March and she paid $500 for her. She was extremely dirty(and very stinky) and very matted so I called our groomer and we got in that day. Praise the Lord! With all that aside, I really hope she works out for our family. I do have a few questions for your yorkies owners that know way more than I do. 1. Are they always hyper? My other dog is very mellow, calm and she just climbs on your lap and sleeps. This yorkie is hyper, hyper, hyper. My kids love it though! 2. The only thing the guy said upon dropping her off with me is that they have never have been able to get her to tell them she needs to go to the bathroom. My jaw secretly dropped. She has piddled twice in my home so far but I have been good about taking her out and she does go outside. I hope this lasts. My question is, is it normal for them to piddle, walk a little more, piddle again, walk some more and piddle again? Haha! I'm used to my other little pup(she is "toy" poodle, shih tzu, bichon mix) pee all at once and then want back inside. 3. Her weight. I am really not sure what she weighs because I think I was lied to and the paper says 5lb, but when I picked her up from the groomer's, they said for her size, she needs to lose a little bit. Her belly does seem to be bulging a bit much in my opinion, but I am no pro. I put her on my scale at home(which I know doesn't mean much) and she is just a hair under 5lb. For my other pup I put half a cup of food in her bowl in the morning and half a cup in mid to late after noon. She never eats it all though. Can they share a bowl if I put maybe a little more in at both those times? How much do you feed your yorkie? What do you feed your pups? Her previous owner brought some left over bag of Dad's trail mix. I've never heard of it personally. The groomer pointed out that her bum was raw, most likely from diarrhea. I currently give my other pup Purina One which as I lurk on here that is apparently a big no no. Ha! I want to find a good, AFFORDABLE, food for them both. I tried Blue Buffalo with my other pup but she always left the little dark things and ate the rest. 4. If you look at the photos in my album you will notice that the hair on her nose is no more. Haha. Well, she has some, obviously, but it doesnt go near the tip like I see on most of the dogs on this site. Is there anything I can do to help her with that? 5. What kind of toys do your yorkies play with. She doesn't seem to like any of the soft, plush ones my other pup has. Ha! |

Welcome to yorkietalk. There is no such thing as a teacup yorkie. The standard is not to exceed 7 pounds. Unlike poodles there is no different sizes a yorkie is simply just a yorkie. Purina is the owners of the waggin train chicken jerky that has been killing lots of dogs as well as making many sick and they will not pull there jerky off the shelves and find out what is wrong so buying there food is supporting that. Buying a higher quality grain free food might be a bit more expensive but you will feed less of it because of the higher quality. My yorkie is on Acana right now and doing well. My yorkie loves bully sticks and pretty much any soft toy that squeaks. Yorkies do not have under coats and have have hair rather then fur so they get cold easy so make sure you have some warm things for her. Is she spayed? I would recommended doing that if she is not. Also when ever you get a new dog they need to go to your vet and be checked out that day or the next day and wait for your vet to tell you whether or not she needs to lose weight. With yorkies it is very important to use a harness not a collar for the leash because of the possibility of collapsing trachea, it is fine to use a collar for tags but never hook the leash to it. I feel each dog in the house needs to have there own bowl even if they eat out of each others dishes so she will need a water bowl and a food dish. If you have young kids make sure she has her own place to go where they are not allowed if she doesn't want to be messed with. Some small dogs are really hyper some are not, mine is very chill most of the time. She may be marking outside more then just peeing a little here and a little there. Congrats on your new family member. |
Welcome to YT I would definitely take her into the vet for a complete check up. That urination pattern might indicate a problem, such as a UTI. And I would suggest bringing in a urine sample with you. Keeping on with that "end" of the dog, have the vet check to see if the anal glands need expressing. She might have rubbed her rear end -ie scooting along the floor if her glands are full. Her teeth should be checked to see if a dental is needed as well. Have the vet check out the knees too; for luxating patella. In terms of food I home cook, so I can offer no kibble suggestions. A full cup of food a day for a 5lb Yorkie is way to much IMO. But it does depend on a number of individual factors. Such as their metabolism rates, how physically active they are, are two such factors. I believe in feeding each dog from their own bowl, this way I do know how much they are eating. In terms of hyperness, you will need to give her a little more time to see if she settles down. Quite frankly most of the time I attribute hyperness to lack of appropriate exercise. A well exercised dog is one that for sure will be calmer overall. My Yorkie can literally go all day. Between hiking and swimming as an adult he keeps up with my large breed dog. These might not be activities you are drawn to, but there are many things you can do in and around the home. Trick training, builds up muscles, expends energy as well in the form of the mental activity required. Fetching balls another good one for burning off excess energy. Playing find the "treat" is another good one, or find that toy. We had a member who created a whole indoor agility course for her Yorkie. Finally on the subject of spaying if she isn't, please seriously consider getting this done. |
No, she is not spayed, but she will be. Her previous owner wanted babies so that's why she isn't yet. I just got her yesterday so I am assuming the first day of crazy hyperness is for that reason. She is definitely more mellow today. At the groomers they said she has worms. Or whatever those little white things in her poo are. She is definitely getting some excersize with my boys and other pup. They love her! My other is being a bit stand off-ish with her. I think she is confused. But the yorkie keeps on trying to play. And I am making an appointment for the vet. They are really busy so I can't just walk in with a new pup. |
I am glad you brought her home. Gemy has given you some good advice. The first thing is find a good vet and take her in for a good assessment. Get her and your other dogs on a good diet. I use 1/4 cup good kibble per dog twice a day but, I do cook for my dogs too and that is the bulk of their food. I consider the kibble their crunchy stuff. :D Usually exercise will make her less hyper. Play is good for bonding and training too. I think each dog needs their own crate, food and water bowls and even some special toys and blanket is a good thing. (My babies each have their own Kong for chewing and treats). The less hair on the nose thing, should be checked by the Vet. Could be bad hair cut, skin problems, or a dozen other things. You vet can start her on a wellness plan of shots up to date, worm, heart worm, and flea preventive and tests to assess any health problems the Vet thinks might be going on. Best wishes and welcome to YT. |
I just saw the later post about worms, probably tape worms from fleas. This needs to be treated ASAP. Fleas can infest your home and other dogs. She wll feel 100 % better with out worms. |
Dad's is actually a brand that is manufactured about 2 hours north of Pittsburgh. The town it is located in is where I went to college. One of my sorority sister's family owns it. It is good food but to be honest, I only see people with big dogs use it. I actually steer more towards the expensive grain-free food for my pups. A lot of yorkies have sensitive tummies so I felt like it was a little harder finding the right food for their breed compared to others, but that's just my opinion. I feed mine Nutrisource Grain-free Seafood Select. I used to have my one yorkie on Wellness Small Breed Adult but the Wellness brand was making him itchy. Sometimes you just have to pick a brand and try it out and see how they do on it. I am sure there's a thread around here that recommend some quality dog food brands to try. And about the hyper thing - I think it's completely normal. My Geno is going to be 2 in May and he is as hyper as he was as a puppy. He's calmed down a little but he still runs around like crazy. If you take your dogs on walks, it is suppose to help wear them out a little so maybe that would help with the constant hyperness. Definitely let the vet know you need to be seen ASAP due to the worms. I don't know about your vet but my vet would find some kind of room in the schedule as quickly as possible. Worms can be very uncomfortable for her and they also sometimes drag their butt along the carpet to scratch their butt. It's funny to watch but at the same time sad cause they are obviously uncomfortable. Plus since you have another pet, they could end up getting infected as well. :( |
I don't know if you have seen this thread yet but everyone is just listing what they feed their pup. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ml#post4084227 You might be able to get some ideas on a brand to try out from it and people's opinions about it. |
I can 100% tell you that you have came to the right place to get guidance and help with all questions regarding your new family member and so far it appears you have been given excellent advice!!! Like getting her into the vet's office ASAP and don't forget to mention the tinkle issue because it does sound like it might be an UTI. So I decided to cover the other bases... :p ask as many and even if you think they are stupid questions as you like tons of people are here to help... PS sometimes people might come off rude or nasty sounding but don't take offense because once you join and share your Yorkie baby with us we all become her extended family and just like normal families we defend and fight for what is in her best interest so convo's tend to become emotionally charged at times but always for what is in her best interest ;) oh we also demand lots of pictures and funny stories of our extended family members :D And the last most important thing that nobody has mentioned... DO NOT EVER compare any other breed's actions and personality to a Yorkie :p because trust me they are nothing like any other furbutt you have had haha They compare better to a loving, intelligent, hyper sometimes sneaky and back talking spoiled child :p Oh and welcome and congrats on the newest family member and thank you for showing her a better life, which I am sure down the road you will be thanking her for making your families life better. |
She's really a cutie!! |
Congratulations on your new addition :) She is a cutie and definitely sounds like she is in better hands now. At 2 years old, I wouldn't be too concerned about her getting any larger. For my two, I measure their food with a shot glass. They each get one scoop in the morning and one in the evening. My two weigh 7 and 5 lbs. I wouldn't let them share because you won't be able to keep track of how much they are actually eating. There are a lot of opinions on food here, but I personally think grain free kibble is great. Some people home cook, feed raw, use dehydrated... But we travel too much and that wouldn't work for us. Do some research and figure out what is best for your pups :) I definitely think you can do better than Purina One though! |
Congratulations and welcome to Yorkie Talk. You will find your yorkie will eventually settle down and become one of the family. Keep in mind it will take months (plural) for this new dog to feel comfortable with you, your family and the new living quarters. Try not to look for too much too soon. Just take it day at a time. With regards to lies from the seller. Well, unfortunately that's all too much the norm these days. When we found Bailey on Craigslist, we were told he was up to date on his shots and was in great shape. I asked for the location of their vet, we got the address, we went right over. Turns out, the location we were given was a field. That put up the red flags. The next morning we went to our vet only to find he had mange, tapeworms and parasites. Within 30 days that boy was healthy, happy and one of us. As for "potty mistakes" Bailey doesn't tell us either. We pretty much have him on a routine and he is walked 3 times a day around the neighborhood. The neighbors may not know our name, but everyone knows his. So, take time and you'll have a great and loyal companion. |
Oh and about food... I feed "Taste of the Wild" which is a good food and I get it at Tractor Supply 15lb bag $27.99 which I believe is cheaper then what you use now and due to it being a higher quality food they need less food so it last longer... Mine LOVES the Pacific Stream that has Smoked Salmon but I am not so happy with the smells that come from his rear haha but we deal just to make him happy and I also switch up between the 4 flavors. Hi. I hope this little girl has a much better home now. Glad to hear she is going to be spayed. When you do get her to the vet make sure they do a fecal exam to check for other worms as well. Yes, it does sound like she has tape worms. Did the groomer find any fleas? Even though it is winter they can still carry fleas on them. Comb her through with a flea comb because you cannot always find them by just looking. The peeing does not sound normal to me. She could have a bladder infection. Certainly something to talk to the vet about. She should not have to stain to urinate. It's good that she knows enough to pee when you take her out. Just keep taking her out frequently until she gets the idea that is the way it is done. Some people get a bell to put by the door and have the dog touch it's paw to the bells before they go out. That way they learn to ring the bell to let you know when they have to go. Yorkies are high energy dogs but should not be hyper. She should be able to calm down after some exercise. A regular exercise schedule is really important for any dog's health and mental well being. They usually love to play fetch. I have bought several 2" balls for Gracie. We play indoors and out. Most of the grocery store type kibble food is really low quality stuff. The pet food industry is not regulated so what they claim and what is true are usually two different things. You might want to read up on kibble, how it is made, and what is in it. I'll give you a link to a site that lists ingredients and rates them. If you see a long list of synthetic vitamins at the bottom of an ingredient list it is because the nutrients are just not in the food it's self. Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor There are other places you can get info on pet foods. Just do a search on how dog food is made. I feed my girl a commercial raw dog food. No synthetic anything. Only grass fed non injected meat sources. She eats better than the rest of the family. I think your vet should be able to treat the nose hair problem as well unless it has been that way too long. She is adorable. I hope she has a wonderful new life with you. |
