| Your right. They are very bad places. A puppy mill takes purebred dogs of questionable quality and breeds them until they cannot be bred anymore. They keep the dogs in very small filthy cages and are never let out. The puppies are taken away at a very young age and shipped to various brokers and pet stores across the country. Many of them die but that is OK with these people because they breed on such a large scale they can afford to lose a few pups. Many people have bought sickly puppies from these places. Many have genetic disorders that can cause long term suffering or even death. It's a very bad idea but the public can't seem to resist these adorable looking puppies. I don't deny the puppies are adorable and it is certainly not their fault but buying one of these puppies is supporting the disgusting people who abuse these poor animals for their own profit. Remember the mother of that adorable puppy is still sitting in a filthy little cage and is probably about to be bred again. Last edited by gracielove; 12-22-2012 at 07:57 AM. |

| Welcome to YT! And, no, you are not stupid.... Basically, anyone who breeds dogs just to make money and not in the interest of improving any particular breed.

| It is hard to believe that people do such things but it is a sad fact. People also breed dogs for fighting to the death and bet on the outcome. The world out there is not always a kind one. It's usually the innocents that suffer. |

What most people don't know or understand is that there is no protection or laws that cover breeders who sell directly to the public because they don't need to have any inspections. Some of the worst puppy mills are breeders selling over the internet, right now there is no regulation for these types of facilities. When the laws were made, the internet did not exist, and lawmakers thought people buying from a breeder would visit the kennel and see for themselves how dogs were raised, but now with shipping, buyers never see kennels. Kennels in themselves are not inhumane, but wire bottom kennels where the dogs defecate through the wires (often stacked over other cages) are inhumane as they damage the dogs feet. The list goes on and on, there is often no vet care, dogs are bred until they die, cages are rusty and dogs aren’t' given proper nutrition. Dogs have been known to eat another dogs leg off, and there is no grooming at all. While grooming may seem frivolous to some, a dog with 6 inch nails is in pain, and I've seen pictures of dogs who are so matted that they can no longer walk. So let’s not call commercial breeders puppy mills, unless they haven’t passed inspections, or unless they sell directly to the public and aren’t inspected at all, if we do, we are doing a disservice to all those dogs who are truly being tortured. I don’t want people to think this is about bettering the breed, that’s a whole different topic. To the OP, if you are considering buying a dog over the internet, please visit the breeder in person. Don’t rely on the breeder having a nice voice or seeming nice from your conversations. Sales people know how to reassure you that everything’s okay, and they are treating their little breeding dogs wonderfully. Here’s a video I made on puppy mills, these are NOT the worst pictures I could find, but it is graphic.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Everyone above is right on point. If you are looking for a puppy please go to the YTCA website. There is a list of breeders. Or go to a shelter. There are many that need saving. But ask questions. Lots of questions to every breeder you talk to

| I have a breeder that comes highly recommended. I'm still going to c for myself though. I feel really bad for animals in general. Taken away from their mom and never seen again...I couldn't imagine. That's y they deserve the best care money can buy!! |

| It takes a lot of people to make up a world. Unfortunately there are those who look for an easy buck any way they can get it. These puppy mills are disgusting places with no regard to the poor animal. Many have been busted, but many continue. There's no real way to stop a puppy mill as there is no way to stop a sick individual from taking out innocent children with a semi automatic rifle. There are just sick people out there. |
