Harness...necessary? I'm trying to prepare my home and self for a new puppy I'm getting next month. I was told to get a harness, leash, and collar...along with a long list of things I dnt deem necessary. Do I need a harness? What is its purpose? Can I just get a leash and collar? Help!! Also do your Yorkies like wearing the little cute clothes I see some of them wearing? Is it hard to dress them? Thx!!:confused |
Depends who you ask. Most people on YT choose to use a harness because yorkies have delicate tracheas. It aries by dog though. Yes, I would get one and use it. Not sure what else is on your list that you don't think is necessary. Most of it probably is though. |
Ok thx...I'll def get one then. Guess they know lots more than I do so ill listen to them and stop being cheap!! |
Yorkies are pron to collapsing trachea and a collar can cause that if a leash is hooked to it. Collars are great for tags only but never hook the leash to it. There is no cure for collapsing trachea so if a dogs gets it has it forever and there have been cases bad enough where the dog has to be put down because they just can't breath but that's usually when they get older or if it is an extremely bad case. |

There are harnesses that are the same price as a collar. Some are adjustable so they can "grow" with your pup. When grown you can invest in a nice leather harness that will last a very very long time. There are a couple brands that are great... good luck |
Harnesses are a must, they can be a lifesaver in an emergency situation if you ever need to pick your dog up very quickly by jerking them into the air and into your arms. I would never walk a Yorkie without one. As for clothes, they do need jackets in cold climates. Many wear PJs at night, and/or snuggle under the blankets. Some wear boots to protect their feet from the snow. Mine love to wear dresses and vests, some for warmth and some just for fun. My one rescue loves to wear dresses... I can tell it makes her feel very special to get all dressed up! |
WOW!! Didn't no they were so important. Thx so much. You all jus saved me from unknowingly harming my pup. I really appreciate it! |
I also had no idea they were so important!!! I've been walking him with a collar!! And my daughter accidently jerked him cus she was walking him on our snowy/icy street and car almost hit her...she jerk the leash hard! DO YOU THINK SHE ACCIDENTLY DAMAGED HIM???     (AS SOON as I'm feeling better ~sick~ i'm running to the doggy store to get a harness!!)   |
I bought an inexpensive harness for Ziva when she was a puppy. It was adjustable and we are still using it for Abby 3 years later! They are a good investment, the dogs learn to walk nicely in them and they are easy to buckle into the car. We use recycled baby t-shirts to keep the girls warm when our weather gets chilly (Today!) |
I totally agree that a harness is a necessity! I use a Puppi brand harness and love it! I have no fear that she will slip out of it, as it fits snugly and the arm holes are the right size. I also have the adjustable ones but I have a hard time fitting them correctly. |
Yes, small dogs do have delicate tracheas and Yorkies are prone to CT. Getting the right harness can be tricky because some of them will still go up high enough on the neck that it still presses on the trachea. When the puppy pulls, as they do when they are not trained, it press on the trachea and can cause damage. Some people have used a ferret harness on their very small puppies because they could not find a dog harness small enough. Ask your breeder how much they think the pup will weigh and measure when you bring it home so you can get one that will fit. Maybe the breeder can suggest one that they know to work on their puppies. I use a break away cat collar on Gracie so she always has her Id tag on. That would be the main reason to put a collar on a small dog. I don't think a collar is a good idea for a small puppy. |
I love YT!!! U learn so much!!! Thank u all for your tips. I will definitely go try to find a good harness ASAP |
Along with a harness, to dress or not to dress is strictly your choice, however if you live in a cold climate you will certainly want to invest in a sweater/coat. Yorkies don't have the undercoat like other dogs so they get cold very easy. I don't dress mine very often in the house, unless it is for fun. However when I wear a jacket, she wears a jacket. She shivers at the slightest little breeze. She also doesn't mind me putting sweaters and coats on her at all, she also has boots for when it gets real cold and doesn't mind that either. |
I didn't know dogs really get cold!! Here in Germany, we have pretty fierce winters that last til about May. He will definitely need a jacket then. Thx!! |
