| What to do with my sick yorkie?? Hi I am new to this site. I bought a little yorkie puppy a week ago. For a few days he was great but on Thursday he stopped eating. At 4 am we ended up taking him to the emergency clinic. They kept him for the night. The next day we picked him up and we we told that we would have to force him and make sure to give him nutri cal. Well I stayed up all the next night feeding him. But at 4 am I knew things were not right so back to the emergency vet we go. They took him back in again and put him on Iv to get his sugars up, we'll now he is still there 2 days later and still not eating on his own. The vet called last night to tell us that it seems he has liver shunt and would need to be operated on, I am wondering if anyone has had these problems with their yorkies? If they operatate what kind of issues would this little guy have with his life.......we are so so attached to him |

| There are many here who have dealt with liver shunts. I haven't so I can't really speak from experience. They will be along shortly to help you. I CAN tell you that from all I've read that the surgery really seems to help and the dog is better after that. If the vet suggests it, I'd definitely do it. Also, welcome to YT. I'm sorry it was under these conditions that you found us but I'm glad you found us. I'll keep your little one in my prayers. What's his name and how old is he?

| Notify your breeder immediately so she can assume responsibility for selling this poor sick baby! I would take that baby to the nearest vet school and get a "valid" second opinion that the breeder can not dispute, even thopugh she will probably want to get her own second opinion. You have not had that baby long enough to be responsible for this! Check your contract...what did she specify as far as a health guarentee against just this kind of thing....THIS IS WHEN BUYING FROM AN ETHICAL, REPUTABLE BREEDER PAYS OFF!!! I am so sorry you are going thru this....it is heart breaking....the surgery usually is very successful, if you are using a vet/surgeon that is very well versed in the procedure. YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Welcome to YT - I'm just so sorry that is under sad circumstances. But there are really great surgeons and vet schools that do an awesome job with Liver Shunt surgeries. It is very important to have the experts diagnose and operate - a general vet is just NOT the ticket here. Univ of tennessee is a great vet school. Dr Karen Tobias will even do phone consults. We had another person here recently - she is from Ontario Canada - she went there about 1000 miles from us - to get the surgery - all is well with her pup now. If you do a search on here for Liver Shunt - you will find numerous threads. Many contain pertinent info on diagnosing and treating LS. Also yahoo has a liver shunt support group. Best of luck

If I ever have a dog diagnosed with liver shunt, I will crawl over broken glass, all the way from Texas to Tennessee, to Dr.Tobias, for her help and her corrective surgery! She has trained other vets, but I am not familiar with who they are and where they practice....you may be able to see if she will recommend someone closer to you.... | |
