Yorkie Eye Drainage My 3 month old Yorkie's eyes have been tearing a lot it's just clear tears no colored drainage. I wanted to know if she might be allergic to something or if the was common to the Yorkie breed? I'd appreciate any help or advice anyone can pass onto this new Yorkie dad. |
I do believe it is normal. A friend warned me about it and my girl does it often. I just keep her face cleaned because it will mat up |
Is there a smell to it? A smell could mean more i think. Rosie's eyes run all the time. I too just keep her face clean. She does have seasonal grass allergies. |
1 Attachment(s) No smell to the drainage, her eyes stay wet all the time I was just wondering if this was normal or not? Daisy is my first little Yorkie |
Rosie's eyes drain a lot. I think sometimes it is due to allergies but I have also heard of eye duct problems. I don't know enough about it to give any information. I would mention it to your vet the next time you go. Just to make sure. Daisy is adorable! |
Oh my gosh, she is so stinkin cute!! My Mandie's eyes drain constantly and there is no color..if I don't take care of it daily, it will crust up and THEN start to smell though. |

I don't know how common it is but Gracie has had very little tearing. Does your pup have hair in it's eyes. That can cause some tearing. The problem is that when there is continual tearing the dampness causes something called red yeast to form around the tear duct area and then eventually you get tear stains and gunk around the eyes. There are a variety of ideas about what causes tearing. Excessive tearing could be caused by the body reacting to something. Some have found changing diet has helped. Some have had good success changing to distilled water. |
Gracielove touched on what I was going to say. I have to trim Ginny Joy's hair around her eyes, her lashes and surrounding hair cause her eyes to tear. Rubin's eyes tear a lot, but not from fur poking him. I just keep his face clean. |
If your pup is only 3 months old, she could be teething and sometimes bottled water that his all the minerals removed can help. Look for Gerber's baby water that is used to make formula, not the kind for toddlers. That picture is adorable! |
I think it's due to their own hair getting into their eyes sometimes. No matter how well combed, or how nicely trimmed I have Kaji's hair, his hair will get I to his eyes. I'll find his mustache in his eye sometimes after he's been rolling around. :p |
hows your pup doing now? shes adorable! |
I've found that changing food from regular to grain free made a big difference with hardly any drainage and smell since the switch. Using blue buffalo! |
My Spud likes to lick so I have a licking towel on the couch. I use this to clean his eyes because he gets that tearing stuff in them. I think it is a common Yorkie thing to have to wipe the eyes often. |
Try Gerber baby water. No sodium no flouride one. Waffles eyes have been dry since I put her on that. |
