Only you will know...if it's in pain, uncomfortable in any way might be his way telling you. Before I put my cattle dog to sleep, which was the first time I had to make that decision. I had several people that had been thru it, and they told me that I would know. I was so afraid I wouldn't, but you will, and they will let you know in their own little way. After I had, I realized it should have been sooner, I felt guilty for prolonging it. She was such a trooper with all of it. God bless you during this time.

Last December I had to put my Teddy Peanut to sleep. How did I know? He had a stomach obstruction, lost weight and the vet said he would probably not make it through the surgery. I did not want to put my little Ted through that so the vet recommended I hand Ted back to His creator. I still grieve but have fond memories and know in my heart I made the right decision. Listen to your vet and your heart. When the time comes you will know. Remember when you have the love of a dog in your heart that never goes away. They are precious. I have an ornament on my tree with Ted's picture and I cherish every day God let me have that dog. You will too!

My mom had to put 2 of her dogs to sleep. One of old age and another was a 7 yr old Scottie who had bladder cancer. My mom always told me that she just knew when it was time. The first dog was our family dog who was 16 yrs old and the dog couldn't even move to get up to go to the bathroom. My mom knew at that point that it was time. With our Scottie, she wouldn't move at all and any time she tried to, we could tell she was in pain. Even urinating for her was severly painful and my mom made the decision to put her down. Both times, the vet told my mom that she did the right thing at the right time.

I'm sorry that you are asking this question cause I assume you are trying to make this decision as well. If your dog is in pain and there isn't anything vets can do, then it's probably time. You could also ask your vet. I would hope a vet wouldn't tell you to put down a pet unless they thought it was the right thing to do as well.

I'm so sorry you are in a position that you have to ask this question. My heart truly goes out to you. I think the only way to know is in your heart. You know your baby better than anyone and you can tell when he/she has just had enough. It's the hardest and most loving decision anyone will ever have to make. Prayers for you and your baby.

I am so sorry you are in this position. For many of us, it is the most difficult and yet most loving one , we will need to make over our lifetime.

It seems so trite, but all I can say is that I believe you will know when the time has come. For me, it was if the decision was "all of a sudden" just there and made. No more doubts, only a heart wrenching certainty that now was the time.

We made that painful decision last Mother's Day wkend.

Truly listen to your heart, and listen to your dog.

My deepest sympathy to you and your family

This has to hurt for you to post this. These little ones hold such a special place in our hearts....they will let you know when it is time....when the time comes you will know....always trust what your heart tells you. I'm so sorry that you have to make this decision...it is the final act of love that we can give them, after a life time of them giving us their undying love and devotion.
My heart goes out to you, and your precious little one.

That is one of the most difficult decisions to make. My family told me to put my little Shih Tzu down a year before I actually was able to. He didn't seem to be in pain but he was not himself. He was 15 years old and was slowly gaining more and more disorders. When his vision was poor and then he lost his hearing I knew I could not let him go on like that. He hardly knew me any more and was getting confused. That is no way to live. You can't compare a dog to how you would treat a human. Of course we don't put down our elderly (at least not in this country.... yet) but when an animal is suffering either physically or emotionally it is time to say good bye.

I now regret not doing it sooner. Animals cannot express what they feel to us and I'm sure they do not understand why they have pain or things are not working. At least we can tell someone but they cannot. We can only go by the few symptoms we are able to see. I have never dealt well with death and he had been a part of my life through so many difficult times, it was heart breaking to let go. I truly believe God has a place in heaven for animals that have been good companions for their humans so I will see him again someday and in the mean time he is happy and playing with the kids up there.

I'm so sorry your having to even think about this decision. As hard as it is you have to think of the pets quality of life. Is she/he able to eat? Go to the bathroom? Show some kind of pleasures in life? Is she/he in pain? etc. etc.

I too was confronted with this agonizing decision. All I could do was say to myself, how can I do this to my friend, my companion, my heart?? I just can't do this, I won't do this. .....But I had to come to the realization this is not about me. I owe this final decision to my baby to do the right thing. This is not a time to be selfish. A far more dangerous form of selfishness is to prolong a pet's suffering simply to postpone my own.We all must make these decisions based on our own pets, not on what anyone else did, is doing, or would do. Our individual choices are ultimately the right ones.

The painful truth is that if your pet is terminally ill, and especially if it is suffering and unable to function, it will die; the decision you must make is not whether its life will end, but how, and how much discomfort you are willing to allow it to endure. It takes courage to assume this last duty and it is our last responsibility to a pet which has given us love and companionship.

I wish you strength, courage, and peace in making this difficult decision....

This must be the hardest thing to do posting about this. Like everyone else before me said. You only know when it is right.

For me it is quality of life for my furkin, not for myself. I think about them as if I was them what would I want. I had to do it twice within three months of each other. One we knew was coming. He had cancer in his ear. The other was sudden. I knew I would miss them dearly. But the greatest gift I could give them is to die with dignity.

I have something for you. I hope this helps

A Dogs Prayer
--Written By Unknown Author, 1982

Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me. Do not break my spirit with a stick for, though I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn. Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps fall upon my waiting ear. Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Keep my pan filled with water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side and stand ready, willing, and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger. And, my friend, when I am very old, and no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath that I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.... I will always be your best friend.
