| growing hair? This may have been asked already..but I couldnt find exactly what I was looking for. Im trying to grow Joeys hair out. When I first got him I wanted him to be like a show dog, long flowing hair, top knot, just beautiful... Well, reality hit. I cant grow his hair! His first trim was around 3 months just to even him up and since he was so tiny I was scared to do it. Again at 6 months I took him in but this time I shaved him down. It was mid summer in Florida, and I felt bad for him. Since then (hes almost a yr) he has had 1 trim and that was just to even things up a bit...but now all he does is get matts. I got some detangling spray and started using that, and his hair looks nicer and brushes easier but he still gets the matts under his arms and on his back legs where his "thunder thighs" rub together. So today, I picked up some corn starch because I heard that recommended on another post...and it didnt even get the matts out! They are so tiny that they just go through the comb teeth and it doesnt undo. I want my little boy to have long flowing locks, but I cant figure out how to stop the tangles. Also, I use puppy shampoo and a conditioner. I spray the detangling spray on him now each time I brush him and even directly on the matted areas. He doesnt seem to mind me brushing him or even pulling a little on the matts but I dont want to hurt him or get him upset so he doesnt like the grooming process.

My last yorkie's hair grew sooo fast, and while not as naturally silky as ZoE's, it was made so with good products. I highly recommend Isle of Dogs...especially the No. 51 conditioner...it's magic!

| I buy it at the grooming place that's next door to our vet's office. I've also seen it sold at dog shows...but you can probably find it online too.

| I have personally found that the coat will grow when the dogs are kept clean (bath every 5-7 days) and daily comb out. I use a good shampoo and conditioner and don't use a detangling spray unless I cannot for some reason give a bath in my 5-7 day time frame. It's hard to grow the coat to look like a show dog unless you wrap it with coat oil, etc. I was able to grow Teddy to floor length but just had a haircut done (I posted a thread in grooming). Good luck!

| I agree that a weekly shampoo and conditioning rinse will help a lot. You really need it especially with long hair. Since a Yorkie's hair is much like human hair you have to treat it that way especially when it is long. I did see someone say they had their dog shaved under the arms in order to keep that hair from tangeling. I have never had to do that with weekly bathing but I think a cotton coat might need it. I have had long haired dogs of various types for years and found that using an all natural product line does wonders as far as conditioning the coat. Most traditional shampoos (even puppy shampoo) have sulfates in them that strip the natural oils from the skin and coat. They give a kind of "fried" effect to the fur much like if someone had over processed the hair. It tangles and mats more easily and just doesn't lay right. Some brands claim to have natural ingredients but they are not all natural and still contain sulfates. So basically weekly bath with conditioning rinse. The spray conditioner is really helpful for between bath grooming. Daily combing and brushing. Keeping that coat looking nice and manageable does take some work on our part but is so worth it if you really want a long coat. |

| I know you can get Isle of Dogs on Amazon. I'm sure there are other online sites that have it as well. |

| Rosie has the long hair and I found that PEK conditioner works wonders on matting. It can also be used when mixed with water as a detangler. I have tried LOTS of product on my girls. The PEK is the best to make their hair soft and silky, IMHO. I also use other products from IV San Bernard beside the PEK. You comb it through, leave it on a few minutes, rinse out, and have such soft pretty hair for your pups! Also, a good brush and comb is essential. I prefer Madan.

| Thank you everyone! I'm going to get another brush and comb and stick it in his stocking. He's very hard to shop for lol. I'm not sure what his coat would be considered...probably cottony. His hair is thick and has a wave to it if it gets longer and wet.
